cold weather riding

#1 Post by two-stroke-brit » Fri Oct 24, 2014 12:59 pm

do any of the Canadian/ northern US members that continue to ride in the cold temps up there,
restrict the air flow through the LC rads to speed up reaching operating temp.
i saw on the rd350lc.com site a fix with duct tape across the rad cover, but rather inelegant .
you used to see cars with a roll down vinyl grill cover.

my problem is it can be 45 degrees in the morning and 80 in the afternoon.

Some people up here use a piece of cardboard on their car or truck.
How about some Velcro instead? Maybe a small british flag with Velcro or something? :smt003

Found a suggestion in http://www.rd350lc.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. while searching for other info. In in the site's "technical" drop down menu, the section of the in the 1980 RD 350 LC (4L0) problems / modifications section you will see the following text:
"The 4L0 models never had calorstat in the cooling system it's why during winter with cold temperature, they have difficulties to reach the good temperature level. To solve that, Here is a solution commonly used....
To the right of this text is an illustration ( with an article in Espanola) whereby tape was added to the bottom quarter front of the rad guard. A temp quick fix until the Union Jack is available.

It is way too cold and the roads are covered in shit and gravel to even think about riding ...... that is when there is no snow. My bikes are going into winter hibernation this week.

Snow i remember that ,horrible stuff unless your on ski.
I covered the bottom 1/4 of the rad behind the rad guard and it worked like a champ.
Quick morning warm up but never above 1/2 on the gauge in the afternoon.
cheers everyone,
mark

forget tape

remove the upper head water cover in front of the head , then machine in a lathe a place to insert an ypvs calorstat , be carefull on the bypass present or not , if necessary , add one ....

bolt on , and have fun ....

not sure i understand you seb, i am a machinist so you have my attention.
are you talking about machining the fitting on top of the head or the
head itself or both.
are the ypvs thermostat housing a different casting?
thanks mark

Either should work Mark, you just need a land to locate the thermostat in. As long as there is sufficient depth for it to open I would turn the grove in the removable housing not the head.

Yes, sadly the YPVS housing wont fit.
