Isle of Man TT 2019

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Sun Sep 07, 2014 2:10 am

Seriously considering a trip perhaps for "Mad Sunday" - if I can ship my Elsie I in a C-can. Checked the TT website. Trying to decided between an Inn or camping it while considering storage for the bike. I understand its not a cheap venture. Open to suggestions for contacts and/or to anyone else who has all ready made the pilgrimage to the Mecca of motorcycle racing. I agree with Mr. Val Rossi's opinion, regarding the race, hence the excited to see it - perhaps ride it. Thx Scott.

Unless you have very deep pockets I would find another option to shipping your elsie there and back. Short term purchase, borrow or rent a ride any of which I would think a better option financially. To my knowledge mad sunday is not as mad at it used to be and is marshalled accordingly these days. Maybe an e mail to a British bike mag may point you in the right direction. The IOM is a great place to visit especially during the TT.
Just my opinion hope it helps.

Opinion welcomed.Today contacted an IMO travel agent and she advised Mad Sunday is still open to the public. Found bike rentals for $1100 Cnd per week. Still will be searching accommodations and shipping options. Found a local who has a relative in banking there. Small world.

I stand corrected - it worked. If I receive anymore info, I'll share with those interested in such an adventure.

Fly to London and rent a bike there. The ride to Liverpool is not onerous and gives you a chance to see a bit of English countryside and get used to driving on wrong side of the road. Personally I wouldn't take my LC to the TT. It is an unforgiving place with lots of high speeds.

The ferry trip over is not to be missed. It is just as entertaining as anything you will see on the island.

The two times I went, we camped out in Union Mills. The camping is excellent and much cheaper than trying to find a room. You do not need a reservation to camp but you will need to arrange a room prob a year in advance.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the ferry to the Isand sails from Liverpool these days.

There are numerous ferries. When we went in 2007 it ran from both Liverpool and Heysham? just north of Liverpool. Regardless, the ferry ride is well worthwhile.

Historical racing question here about the Formula 2 TT IMO 1980 and Charlie Williams win on a RD350. Was his win on a TZ or a RD Elsie pro type? There's small print on the poster (bottom rt hand side) that sorta hints it was an LC TT win but suspect it's Yamaha's PR people making a sale pitch link for future LC customers (me included) regarding it's Race Developed pedigree. Note the "LC" is missing in the small print. Imagine someone, on this knowledgeable form, was perhaps at the race to confirm what's up. (tried to add the poster to this thread - if not its at http://www.rd350lc.net/RD350LCDealerPoster.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

i think if it was an F2 bike then the engine had to be based on a road bike engine, so if it was water cooled, it would indeed have been a 350 LC engine.

Learnt the following regarding an LC winning at the Isle of Man:
- won on a standard LC but tz rolling chassis. Dave Dean raced that year on a standard 350lc for yamaha, he did a 96 mph lap in the rain first time there.
- is the same Charlie Williams who had the shop in Chester (not sure where that is).
- the shop is now co-owned by Gary Dugdale who used to be the shop manager for Charlie and Neil Jones. Gary is a member of the Dugdale family from Alvanley, in Cheshire, who were a Yamaha main agent (road and race) and who Charlie used to race for.

If there is any more info, about this win, be interested in knowing. Thx to all who contributed.

More insight on the LC / Isle of Man TT connection. Thx to Johnny Corrin for his insight:
"The bikes that Charlie & Dave Dean rode were prepaired by Johnny Gibbons from Burscough Lancashire. He used to prepair most of Charlies bikes and was asked by Mitsui Yamaha UK to prep the bikes to win the Formula 2 world championship as this was also to coinside for the launch of the RD350 LC. Johnny also prepaired many other bikes for riders in the TT & Manx races. Keith Trubshaw, & Ian Newton, & Ian is married to Johnnys daughter. Ian & Johnny now prepair bikes for the Superteen races series, which Ian runs. Ian & Johnny work about 2 miles from my workshop." Curious to know if there is any photo's or film available of that 1980 race - thx Scott.

Recent article in Motorcycle Industry News:
"The Yamaha RD350LC was today revealed as the motorcycling community’s favourite bike of the 1980s. The RD350LC triumphed by way of an online poll (IMO Classic TT poll 2014), which was conceived by the UK’s most recommended motorcycle insurance specialist, Bennetts in collaboration with leading classic bike publication, Classic Motorcycle Mechanics".
#2 was the Honda RC30. Here's the link to the article for pick #3 ( a lovely Suzuki, hmm...) Link ( or google: motorcycle industry news rd350lc)
