Finally landed an RZ...

#1 Post by FloridaSteve » Sun Jul 24, 2011 7:30 pm

After a long trip and a nice adventure (you can read a little about it here http://motorcyclephotooftheday.com/2011 ... -vacation/) I made it home with my first RZ350. It's a really clean and low mileage bike. I'm not new to 2 strokes. I've had my share over the years, RD400's, Kawi triples and the LC350. None of them stock so when I rode this beauty today I actually laughed a little. I mean wow did Yamaha just suffocated these things when they were stock.

I do have questions so I'll be hitting the various mod sections to do some research on the the go-to pipes and carbs for these shortly but for now I just thought I'd check in and say Hi.

Some of you might know me from the http://2strokebiker.blogspot.com/ blog and the http://motorcyclephotooftheday.com/blog.

Beautiful bike. Not many in original shape like that anymore.

Those late model oem pipes are not ideal, but they shouldn't strangle it too much.

Those don't look like the stock exhausts that were on the 84-5 US RZ. What chambers are those?

Good catch. Those are the only non stock part. They're the Canadian model pipes that don't have the catalytic converters. They actually look like coned chambers but they sure don't perform like them. I've been riding it a lot the last few days and I think there's something a little off in the jetting. It simply will not wind past 9K rpm. Plugs look OK(ish). It may be pipe related.

I need to get over into the engine section and start asking questions I guess.

The stock Canadian pipes work well, but only if the engine is getting enough air. My 87 was rev limited until I gutted the airbox, drilled 30 holes in the lid, and then went up 3 sizes on the main jet. Easily pulled hard past redline after that.

Wonder if the pipes are oil clogged and baffles oil soaked too?? Worth pulling (easy) with a good cleaning (oven cleaner and high pressure H2O) just to rule that out. If not that, could be a restriction/ trash in carb or in petcock. Were the carbs just off the bike?

I knew I didn't know those pipes. They look worlds better than the US boat anchors which weighed like boat anchors.

the baffles are not removeable (hacksaw?) unfortunately.

Well, that takes the easy part out of the equation then... :smt009 Are the baffles packed on those model pipes?
