Hello from Norway

#1 Post by bikerdude73 » Fri Jul 15, 2011 2:21 pm

Got this RD350 YPVS 1983 model this may. Not sure what to do with it yet.
So far i have changed the oil and gaskets in the front forks. Redone the brakes. Had a testdrive a few days ago and it needs some work.

I need to get better handling and brakes. Not sure on how to go about it.

But here is the bike as it was when i got it.

Seeing no one else Welcomed you :smt009
I am in the USA & the most southern part of this lovely land.
Nice to have a Norwegian about in this very international group :smt006
I quess a set of stainless steel or newer tech brake lines & brake pads from the company GALFER would be in order.
another company named TELEFIX sells fork braces to make the forks sturdier.
the fork springs are weak for the weight of our machine out of the factory so up the tension via a spacer of about one inch or some higher tension springs with a progressive (thats the BRAND NAME) likeness will help alot.
LAST but not LEAST ,new tyres( Dunlop 501 R ok) as like the more than twenty year old brake lines are well beyond there lifespan.
its a pain in the arse bleeding all the air from the brake system but the air does move up into the master cylinders in a few hours, sometimes days.
FERODO brake pads front & rear might be easier for you to get in your part of our world.
WELCOME to the GROUP :smt006

I now have new tires on the bike. I went with Continental Conti Go.
100/90-18 front and 130/70-18 rear. These improved the handling of the bike alot! :smt003

Next up is to decide if i want just new braided brake hoses or if i mount my thunderace calippers. Also doing some cosmetic work.
But the season is pretty much over here in Norway. Its getting cold and we had a very crappy summer with tons of rain. So not much riding at all..

Hopefully it will be better next season!

The clearance is good. No problem at all.
Ill check out Galfer :smt001

The bike is in good original condition. But still need to redo the bellypan this winter. Apart from that maybe the right side panel.
Ill have to wait and see how much cash i can spend :smt003

Just went with SS lines on my bike. There are tonnes of people selling custom hoses, just measure the length you need and type of fittings. Went with a double banjo from the reservoir and they made a big difference. I always thought it was over rated but to feel, I was impressed. Now my lines were CRAP, so that might have been a problem as well.

welcome...

130/70-18 rear i could have swore during lean angle the sides would squish causing rubbing on the swing arm and possibly wobble or accident?

not good to go two tires sizes over oem rim size. or maybe this has been that wrong info over the years?

I have tried the bike with the new tires and cant see a problem with it at all when i comes to good clearence. Maybe the chain guard in very high speed. But the swing arm is miles off.

Now im curious to mount a new and better exhuast. And then also mount a better air filter and of course re-jet the carbs.

Very interested in advice when it comes to exhaust systems. Also i cant seem to find a KN filter for my 350YPVS? Is there something else that works just as good?

I got some new braided hoses in the mail a few days ago. Goodridge from ebay.co.uk Got a nice set for the front.

Small picky:

Welcome to

+1 on the others comments. But I wold be doing a bit more research befor I upped tire sizes, Yu may find that the rims will only suuport a certain tye size correctly, put a bigger tire on and the tyre will change shape hence perform worse than a standard size, Just my opinion.

"And then also mount a better air filter and of course re-jet the carbs"

Stock airbox, snorkle removed, and slyghtly dry filter, will get you the air you need, there are plenty of threads with evidenc to show that the stock with some slight modifications work well.

Pipes + Wicked, JL and Kenny Pipes to name a few ( definately spoiled for choice in this area ). If you change pipes and alter filter you will definately need to Jet up the mains. V force reeds as well seem to be popular, as well as sandard Banchee reeds.

With your brakes if you bleed them on a bench (horizontal ) with a bit of mucking around and a pair of extra hands youl find it quicker, Just slide a couple of bits of wood in about the same thikness as the disks, then when your ready to mount, slide wood out and slide the brakes on. Works a treat.

+1 on the braided lines.
Steve that built my bike fitted R1 Blue Dot Calipers and Lines and I've never felt brakes so strong and on a light bike they're awesome.
