1987 RZ350

#1 Post by Snoopjonnyjon » Tue Jun 28, 2011 10:34 am

This is the RZ I bought in Calgary last weekend. I'm not sure if the previous owner was a member of this forum or not, but it sounds as though he was in contact with Roger while building the bike.

The extent of the mods to my knowledge are: 421cc Athena, Wicked's pipes, pod filters, and +4 timing. It still has stock reeds and carbs, I don't know if that is holding it back. It seems to make fantastic power up high, and be extremely weak on the bottom. The hit is very fun, but it would be nice to be able to ease the clutch out at a little lower rpm without it falling flat on its face when going to work at 5am. I haven't spent enough time around these bikes to know if that is just the nature of the beast or if I can improve the low end a little. My other fast 2-stroke is a KX500, so I'm used to that monster torque right off idle.

The previous owner figured the squish was off, and that thinner base gaskets would improve things greatly, but I haven't tried that yet.

Hmm... Interesting. PM his name and i can take a look what is done or if we did have have anything to do with the motor? I know our very 1st 3- kit's we were off by .040in 1 mm so it's possible it might be one of our earlier motors. Also sent them Base gaskets to correct. Them are our pipes and looks to fit under all them belly pan and fairings which is great!

Pipes fits perfectly under the fairing. There was a little clearancing done by the brake lever and kickstand.

I appreciate all the info in your PM's. I'm afraid this bike could turn into as much of an addiction as my KX500... I wasn't really done until the entire catalog had been thrown at it.

Addiction is correct! HAHAHAH.... I feel like a drug dealer sometimes selling these parts to people :smt005 The banshee guy's are the worst addicts. Them guy's will do anything to get their parts it seems sometimes HAHAHA.... Thou i think it's like that in most hobbies. But all in all it's great fun and once one starts it never ends.... Those base gaskets made a night and day difference. I don't have to rev it to 6000rpm before I start letting the clutch out from a dead stop anymore!

It was good I checked on it, the head bolts hadn't been retorqued, and they were barely more than finger tight. Coolant was leaking into the cylinders. No harm seemed to be done though, everything looked perfect inside.

I haven't ridden it on pavement since the change. I did the work on the farm, so I only got to ride it on gravel roads afterwards. I was unable to hook up at any speed. I figured spinning and fishtailing sideways at 170kmh was enough on gravel so decided to wait for some pavement to find out what it really has.

I also turned the timing up to +7, and filled the tank with 100LL and 927.

My dad couldn't understand that within 2 hours of showing up with a shiny new bike... it looked like this. :smt003

HA HA HA HA...! That is way too funny wondering what the look on his face was when he seen it in pieces!

So I'm guessing she's back together and running? How she pull on power band? she a smooth pull?

Yes, it is back together and running well.

I'd consider the drivability to be pretty good now. I bought a 15t front sprocket to put on, but haven't had a chance yet. It has 17-40 now, and is really geared a lot higher than I prefer for the riding I do. I don't think I have been higher than 3rd gear in the powerband. I've only shifted higher to make sure all the gears worked. I still have to rev and slip the clutch a little more than I would prefer when leaving a dead stop. I found listings all the way down to 12T on the front, which I'd be interested in seeing if I have swingarm rubbing then. That would really make a hooligan bike out of it.

Whether it pulls smooth really depends on the definition of smooth. There's no bucking or stumbling when on the throttle, but the power sure isn't linear! At 8000rpm, the front just comes up on its own, no matter what. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm barely giving it throttle at that rpm, it still yanks it. Riding it in the 4000-6500 range is just comfy. It makes adequate torque to pull around fine, without going full retard like it does at high rpms.

Going full retard is fun unless cops are around.

Hey Johnny, all your free time is going to be either riding that RZ or dickin with it... Have fun. If your in the Jaw with it, stop by and we can go for a ride...

You should have degree'd the cylinders with the old and new base gaskets. Did you check the squish???

I just took it apart, and stuck it back together. As shameful as it is, I bet Roger has a better idea what my squish is than I do.

I hope all my time isn't spent dicking with it. I still need to be dicking with my Ranger and unfortunately now my KX500 seems to have developed an intermittent misfire. The last two years I almost lost interest in street riding and was making a trip to the forest every weekend to ride offroad... this year it's like I rediscovered street bikes and just want to ride pavement.
