New member, just bought a 1976 RD400

Hi,

My name is Phill, I'm from Ottawa Ontario, just bought a restored 1976 RD400 :)
After searching for many months I realized there are allot of over priced beat up RZ\RD bikes out there. SO after locating this one and talking to the owner I knew it was meant to be.
I absolutely adore the bike, received lot's of positive comments from old school guys.
Plan is to keep it original (well for now)
Here are a couple pictures.

Looking for some advice.....
So after putting about 60-70KM on it I noticed the oil light flashes on when releasing the throttle at higher RPM's, only for a half second or so but it has me a little worried ....
I've checked the oil level and it's about 2\3rd full, check the oil feed lines and they are in good shape and not pinched. I'm going to check my electrical connections this weekend but I'm starting to think the oil pump is getting a little weak.

Just wondering if there anything else I should be looking for?? I've tried searching the board and other sites but most threads tend to jabber off onto other topics.

Nice bike
if the oil light is the same as the RZ it is just an oil level indicator from the reservoir not reading pressure from pump so likely an electrical issue

Like morty said it is just an oil injection low level indicator

when it stays on that means the oil level is low
still can ride a few miles......

This is not oil pressure....

I had my Rd400 for three years then sold it ...air cooled ...and points and condensor...

Just make sure your timing is good ..and let it warm up ...before you beat it :smt003

Thanks for the replies :)

Now that I think about it, it's likely the oil gets sloshed around and thus triggers the low oil level sensor.
I'll start by topping up the oil and see how she reacts....

Ya I'm not planning on beating up on her to much as she's a year older than I am and want it to last :)

Nice bike!

I have an RD400G and it does the same thing. I would check to make sure there was oil and it was always half full or a little more and that light would come on and off once in a while. I stopped worrying about it until it came on and stayed on.

Where did you get the bike from? Can I ask what you got it for? I looks mint.

went riding with a friend of a friend last night. he had a rd 400 with dg pipes on it. kinda loud but way cool. I was on my old kawasaki 1100 riding behind him just sniffin up the sweet smell of amsoil. cant wait to get my rz stroker going. pretty impressive what these smaller cc bikes are capable of.
