my well used 84 rz350

#1 Post by graham heise » Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:01 am

G'day race fans.
I've been riding and tuning my 84 rz most days over the last months. My other bikes are gathering dust since i replaced the engine in the Rz. Ran it in with stock pipes, carbs and airbox. I tell ya if you've only been riding at tricked up rz you would plesently surprised as to how nice a relatively stock bike runs.
Since run in i replaced the carbs with vm30 Mikuni's and uni pod filters, also put on the chambers (Zegers chambers).
Well that exersize kept me busy. Ended up replacing pretty well every jet, manifolds and cut the slides to get the jetting dialed in. I tested advancing the timing, reed block spacers but didn't find either mod good enough to stay with.
I bought an edelbrok airflow meter and by balancing the carbs this way the motor runs in it's best tune.
The cylinders on this engine where ported by an Australian road racer and he tuned them with good mirange in mind.
The bike runs awsome and will now pick up the front wheel sometimes in second and really pulls hard exciting tight corners
Anyway since iv'e been on this and other forums reading up stroker builds and such i thought i'd share my experieces with my much loved 84 rz350.

Yes that color scheme looks really good on these bikes.

By chance can you post where you ended up with jetting and the vm30's, etc? And elevation?

Very curios as I have a couple with the same setup.

Thanks.

Kpke. My jetting on vm30's are 320 main jet, p2 needle jet, 6dh3 jet needle on 3rd clip, 42.5 pilot jet 1.5 turns air screw. I cut the slide's from the stock 2.5 to about a 2.75 as the 2.5's where to rich at quarter throttle. I am running uni pod filters, pre mix yamalune 2r at 33/1 ratio. Settings are for sea level. On a hot day ( above 32 Celsius) it will start to blubber at wot. 310 main fixes that i also open the air screw to 2 turns.
For reference the same bike using stock air box with snorkels removed and thin red uni filter was great with 250 mains and all other stock settings for 31k carbs.
I tried 2 into 1 y boot and k&n filter on the 31k carbs. It ended up with 420 mains 25 pilots and needle clip 4th from top with small washer under clip. 4.5 so to speak.
The airbox gave the best low throttle responce, the y boot seemed to be better in upper range of throttle and would probable be better with a different taper needle, the vm30's give the best mid range throttle responce and a little more power at wot.

Thanks Graham. I just looked at my notes and on my thrasher I last dropped from to 380 to 360 main and 35 to 32.5 pilot. 6F9 needle jet (that's what was in there when I got it in 09). But I didn't realize you were premix. I'm using the pump. 42.5 seems like a huge pilot jet, but if it runs good :smt023

OK. Just looked at my premix bike notes. 280 main, 40 pilot jet, 6DH3 needle. That one has not been ridden in a while. My last notes said it has a bit of bucking on decel so it needs more tuning.
