Maui Ride: Piilani Hwy + Hana Hwy

This was last month. We rented a slightly shagged 650 Vstrom and rode around the east side of Maui. The Piilani Hwy runs around the south end of the island and is much rougher than the north route (Hana Hwy). There is a 17 mile stretch of gravel and "unimproved pavement" that is pretty nasty in some spots and very narrow much of the way. So much so that none of the car rental companies allow their vehicles to be driven over it. I have condensed a 2 hr, 70 mile ride into this vid.

It looks much better in full screen. The small screen makes it look really slow. :smt013

Boy does that look like fun. I have been to Maui several times but never done the motorcycle thing.

How much was it?

Any problem with the rental place taking the motorcycle back dirty?

Did you loop all the way around or turn around and come back on the same road?

Did you go to the Blowhole (somebody fell in that a few years back), Emerald Pools, Dragon's Teeth (maybe Sharks Teeth?)?

Thanks for sharing!

It was super fun. I'd rate Maui's roads as possibly the best I have ever ridden and that includes the Black Forest and the Isle of Man. The roads on Maui are that much fun.

We rented a 650 VStrom for about $200 a day. Honestly it was worth every penny in entertainment value.

We started on west side of Haleakala and rode the Piilani Hwy around the south end of the island to Hana. After a lunch and a quick trip to see a black sand beach we ride the Hana Hwy round the north edge of the island back towards Paia. I'll post up vids of that section of the ride.

For anyone who hasn't ridden Hana Hwy, it has to be one of the most entertaining motorcycling roads in the world. Over a distance of about 60 miles it has something like 220 corners and 54 one lane bridges. The pavement is virtually perfect. There are so many corners that I'd estimate you spend 70% of the ride leaned over.
