micron pipes?

#1 Post by AJF » Fri Jan 11, 2019 10:01 am

Hi all. The forum helped me out tremendously on my search for stock handlebars I am going to ask another question.

I have an 84 rz350 (Kenny Roberts) with micron pipes (spec II?). Both exhausts exit on the right side of the bike. I like the power of them, but I would like them to exit on the left and right sides of the bike for visual balance. It would also allow me to install the centerstand. Did/ does micron offer the option?

The ceramic is slightly pitted on the pipes, so I was thinking on copying the dimensions and building a stainless set and just rerouting them if I cant buy a left hand pipe.
Are there any other options?
Thanks again,
Anthony

Spec 2 are a separate company and never offered right exit style pipes.
There was a company around 20 years ago that did dual R side pipes, before they became a little more common , Micron may have been that company?
(Lomas) is one example of later R side pipes.
If you want traditional exhuasts R + L sides, there are still quite a few choices still out there. Spec 2/ Lomas/ Toomey etc..
No point on building a set when you can buy. Only if your building a spec
performance engine will you gain any real advantage w custom pipes.
If you want stainless, Lomas is a perfectly good choice and easily replaceable if damaged

Thanks, they are micron. Any idea which are the best for the street? I thought lomas were supposed to be peaky. I run Dencos on my H1/ H2, but I have not seen them for RZ's. I would think about putting on stock pipes if I could find a decent set.

Regards,
Anthony

Microns were made in England, and very highly regarded by the traditionalists over there. Especially the "small can" style.

I don't recall ever seeing GP style Microns, tho (or SpecII for that matter) and almost all are Chrome/Nickel plated.

If they really are Microns and in good shape, they are worth some money to the right people.

Got any pics?

Both sets of my microns were stamped Micron on the body. It was super easy to identify. I also believe they were separate half construction and not individual cones. Those pipes appear to be cones and have a different style of hanger but I cannot be certain from the far away picture. I have also never seen Nickel plated microns, only black.

I have a pair of microns that could be for sale if you are interested. standard one on each side exit.

not a good pic- the end cans are aluminum, and the chambers are kind of ceramic coated gloss black.

The end cans are stamped micron, the PO called them spec 2's (my confusion). They are I little heavy, but built well. Power down low is good, a bad stumble around 4-5k, and then it takes off to redline. I haven't played with the jetting or the carbs (no airbox, uni foam filters).

I have a bunch of projects going on, and this was running well when I bought it- so I haven't played with it much besides doing a few quick rips close to home.

evan- if you had a pic I would love to take a look at what you have.

I ran Microns on most of my YPVS and Elsies back in the day, They were the "Go to pipes" in Ireland etc. Good pipes, I actually never seen a black set, All ours were chromed/Nickel plated...
I never seen a set with alloy cans either, they were chromed steel and welded on.... Are you sure they are Microns, Microns have non removable cans.

You have a pair of Micralloy pipes made by Codnor. They are black chrome finished. These ones were not the best of the micron range.

Those look pretty close, and they must be black chrome with the pitting I see. Thanks for the help. After searching the forum and the web I am leaning towards toomy's for the street. Any input is welcome.

These are the Micron GP pipes a couple members here had, close to 20 years ago, it was the 1st time I had viewed right side exit stacked pipes on a RZ. Then Lonas R/L style.

These are his old (hi mount)
Not sure if he still offers them, he also has crossover pipes listed now as well for the YPVS.Image

I'm not sure what kind of performance your looking for, but almost all the pipes available will perform quite well. The Toomeys will IMO get you the fastest bike , yes they deliver their power a little higher in the Rev range, but they get the job done.
Their new design gets the better midrange performance @ a lower RPM.
Lonas perform really well too, Power at a higher RPM is of little concern to me, as there are VERY small displacement bikes...and to go fast...you have to REV them to redline anyways..is what it is. I ride RZs like I stole em , point and shoot hooluganism...lol
Crank life is no concern...I've never had a crank failure on a RZ, nor anyone I know. If your racing...your changing your crank on a regular basis anyways, so buy whatever pipe you like and enjoy. The stainless is such a nice option it's hard to not opt for them on s street bike.
