You don't need to go to a marina for non-ethanol. Go to puregas.org to find ethanol free in your area. They usually post octane ratings too.

What octane does the owners manual call for ? I have one gas station close to me that sells 90 octane pure gas( ethanol free) would this work ok? I have stock compression and timing.

NON- Ethanol/Methanol 90 or 91 is PERFECT.

pure-gas.org is a good start but not exactly an all-knowing site.
Many of the fuel stations listed at pure-gas.org are actually lawnmower, auto parts stores, and bike shops that sell 1 qt, 1 gallon and 5 gallon containers of VP or other brand-name non-alcohol fuel in a can. Not pumping stations. In New Hampshire, 15 of the 44 listed are either airports, marina's or Lawn-tractor or bike shops. While this is excellent gas, the price of small quantity (1 qt) canned VP is well over $40/gallon! $87.99 for 5 gallons of VP 4-cycle at the local auto-parts store or bike shop is average around here.

There are several "normal" gas stations on there as well, but the list is pretty sparse.
The closest pumping station listed to me is an airport. The next closest is 40 miles away. There are at least two unlisted pumping stations closer to me that sell race gas from the pump for a more reasonable $9 to $12 per gallon.
Also, be aware that Marinas and airports are not likely to allow you to pull up on your bike and fill your tank. You generally need to bring your 5-gallon jugs and fill. I think it's a tax issue.

It's also a common practice to mix 50/50 expensive 100+ Octane race gas with common pump gas to achieve your desired octane level and/or reduce the total alcohol levels.

Yes our pure gas is a actual pumping station , they have a separate tank just for this.. in farm country.

All my local pure gas stations are actual gas stations, convenience stores with pumps, etc. I take two 5 gallon jugs with me for fill ups and use as needed at home between my bikes and lawn mowers (all 2 cycle BTW) It’s time for another puregas trip already.

The original US owner manual doesn't have a minimum octane noted anywhere. I expect that an octane rating of 90 or greater is fine as that was a common minimum for several 2-stroke MX bikes I owned in the 80's. MX bikes are generally producing more HP per cc and make a good yard-stick in this case.

IMO Octane ratings have been obusificated almost into meaninglessness.
My pore Superbeetle (bought new) ran for decades on Cheap gas, it had a 6;1 comp ratio IIRC
Then "new" octane ratings appeared and I had to use either 89 or 92 to prevent misfires.
Ignore the rating number and use what gives the desired result.

It could also be your jetting or it could be the lack of lead. Lot's of people complain about unleaded fuels causing problems, even with higher octane ratings, in classic cars and motorcycles.
Fuel with alcohol content is also known as "oxygenated" fuel. It makes your jetting lean and lean jetting can cause knock.
