Cylinder base gaskets

#1 Post by AMDshaner » Wed Oct 31, 2018 7:32 am

Hi all,

Continuing on the burning coolant thread, could the base gaskets leaking allow coolant to get into the combustion chamber? Ive never had an RZ engine apart, im not sure if coolant circulates all the way to the bottom of the cylinders or not. I think it would, so i though possibly i should pull the cylinders off and replace the base gaskets also.
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question.. Id rather only pull this apart once rather than put new head gasket in and it still does it then have to pull it apart again..

Thanks,
Shane

The base gaskets do not seal any coolant.

Not really worth going down that far if there’s no signs of an air leak.

This is unfortunately one area that You do not have a ton of options. The head gasket is what appears to be your issue from symptoms. The only way to be sure is to replace it then test it. You can always apply some sealant when yo re-assemble or if you end up having a leak again. Having clean surfaces is important.

The only way for coolant to get on top of the pistons is the head gasket.

Have you checked head nut torque? (in sequence, of course)

Ok just wasnt sure. There are no signs of any leakage at the base gaskets. Everything is dry, no signs of an air leak. Im getting the head checked for flatness so with the new gasket all should be fine then.
Thanks for all the replys,

Shane
