Looks like a shifter leak

Looks like a shifter leak
I noticed that after I ride my LC for longer trips, more than an hour - I will have transmission oil leaks underneath the kickstand leaning left. It is about the size of a quarter and takes about 30 min to accumulate and stops. Think it is shifter related. Anyone know what this might entail?
Thanks in advance.

Shifter shaft seal. Dig out the old one, often with a wood screw and sled a new one on and tap in. Be sure to cover the shifter shaft end with Saran and remove all burrs on the shaft or you'll be redoing it again.

Or neutral switch itself. My plastic housing was cracked around the brass insert for the contact.

Tap the selector shaft's small alloy plugs in as well, if you lose one of those it will drip a small puddle overnight.

Re: Looks like a shifter leak
Hold on there boys. Lets not overlook the most obvious potential source of oil leaking on the left side of an LC. The countershaft sprocket seal is notorious for oil leakage and is much more common source than the shifter shaft seal.
Pull the left side engine cover and I bet you see streaks of oil radiating from the countershaft on the cases behind the front sprocket.

Re: Looks like a shifter leak
Thanks to all - it appears that the oil runs off the curve of the exhaust pipe. Bike leans left so gravity takes its course. Shifter shaft, bushings?
Re: Looks like a shifter leak
You've made an assumption on zero evidence and appear to be running with that. Pull the left side engine case and have a look. That will tell you everything.
I've personally never seen a shifter shaft seal leak but I've had several countershaft seals leak.
Any leak that occurs on the bottom side of the engine will run down to the left edge and then drip onto the pipe. Its the nature of how things are arranged on an LC.

Yup - your absolutely right. Gotta get into it to see.
Thanks

Opposite here... I have had multiple shifter seals leak and a N switch. Never a countershaft seal.Hooligan wrote:

Re: Looks like a shifter leak
I've come across a few leaky shift seals - usually after the bike has been over & bent the shaft...
