Lost piston pin circlip

Hi All,

While rebuilding my engine today I accidentally dropped the piston pin circlip into the crankcase. Just wondering what my options are? Can it stay there, I REALLY do not want to have to split the cases to get it out if I don't have to.

Thx.
J

It must be removed if the engine is to survive. Pick one of these magnets up (Harbor Freight,NAPA,ect.) and it'll probably come out. At worst you will remove the engine from the chassis and turn it upside down and shake it.

A borescope would be nice too to investigate. Hope you are able to locate it and remove it without splitting the cases.

Do NOT leave it in there.

It will lead to a catastrophic failure.

As others have said. Magnet or turn it upside down and shake.

Always, always, always put a paper towel stuffed down around the crank to stop this exact scenario from happening.

i reckon if you turn it upside down you risk it getting in the crank, use a magnet stick as shown above if it will fit, else its strip down time.

This is an advert for using a rag around the piston/rod covering the crankcase opening when doing this work.

Should be fairly easy,
From a 4 stroke not so !

Stuff the crankcase mouths with rags next time :-)

Try blowing with compressed air and see if it pops out if you cannot get a magnet down there.

WooHoo... got it. Picked-up one of the magnetic tools. It JUST fit between the crank journals but boy did the magnet ever want to stay stuck to the crank! I bent the expandable shaft in the process.

Thanks for the advice!
