73 RD 350 First start up

#1 Post by Philaant » Sat Nov 25, 2017 8:04 pm

Just picked up my first bike and RD and I am stoked!
Whole bike is in pretty good shape, was well maintained and under riden by the previous owner with 9500 miles on it.

Cleaned up the carb slides because they were sticking. Mixed up some gas with 2 stroke oil because I wasn't sure of the condition of the automatic oiler and fired it up. And boy does it sound AWESOME. I'm hooked.

Time to step down from cloud 9 for a minute and get back to the oily bits. First thing I noticed was the gigantic plume of white smoke in the garage and the fact that it was only coming out of the left tailpipe. I would imagine if the oiler is indeed working it would explain the excess smoke, but not all of it coming out of one pipe. I did notice a small leak coming out of the oiler when the bike is just sitting.

My two big questions right now are, what kind of preventative maintenance and checks should I be doing, why the smoke out of only one pipe and how much of it should I be getting.ImageImage

Congratulations on your purchase but if you are still on cloud 9 you had better have a parachute. It is smoking from the left because the right cylinder isn't firing. Could be just a fouled plug. Your stinger/silencers extend past the tire. No problem until you wheelie or it breaks off from vibration. And you need to get the oil pump fixed. You will also need a front fender which you will discover soon after you ride it. Good looking bike though and good luck with it.

You guys over the pond love pipes that stick out half a meter from the taillight, do you ?
But hey, that's nothing a good saw and TIG welder can't cure ...

Other than that: nice bike!
