Oil pump id

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Tue Oct 24, 2017 2:43 am

Are theses the same oil pumps for a 4LO? One is labeled IMI; the other 4L1. Both came off RDs.

the yellow paint usually means 350, (how long before people put yellow paint on 250 pumps tho?!) and I believe the codes dont mean anything in this context. Gary will be along soon...

They are both 350 pumps, according to the paint (and only when used in conjunction with those pulleys). There is yellow on both. The 1M1 pulley is the early lc item, but can be used the same as the 4L1 pulley. The slopes and rise are exactly the same. The pump with the 1M1 pulley has the prototype steel insert type top casting in your photo. It's fine to use, but looks a little odd with its flat machined top surface. The other pump is also steel insert type top casting, but this one is the final development item.

One thing to keep in mind is, over the years these oil pumps had a couple of different internal ratios. Make sure you have the matching shaft, otherwise the wrong ratio worm drive will strip the teeth off the ring gear inside the pump. Ask me how I know...

Thx for the 'heads up' on the matching shafts - I lablelled em as soon as I read you post! Stripped gear rings ... yikes, piston seizure on a rebuilt engine.

I didnt know the 350 came with different shafts and ratios... hmm...

Gary, that pump you currently have of mine came from ebay shaft'less, I figured it would be ok as I have one here in my spares, but perhaps I'd better bring it with me when I see you? I'd better look it out, Ive a few months to locate it lol.

The very first 350lc has the same gear as the last Brazilian bike. I think tzracer was just refering to "other" pumps.
