RZ500 CORE?

#1 Post by hailwood1965 » Sat Jun 24, 2017 11:55 am

Are there any rebuilders who will take a complete RZ500 engine--bike been sitting for 10 years--in on a running and fresh unit?

Or, conversely, what does it cost to have someone go through a sitting for ten years engine?

They are not exactly common engines these days. I hard a rebuild was around $4k Cdn but not from a source that I would trust as 'highly reliable' since they hadn't worked with many. Stock pistons only come in 2 oversizes?

Depends where you are, there are a number of reputable US engine builders on the 500 forum, Rick Lance, Brian Turfrey, Bill Wilson to name a few. Andy Jones in Ontario and probably plenty of others if you are in the UK, but that side of the forum would be a better place to ask. I doubt you would get an exchange engine, they will prefer to rebuild yours and not likely have inventory of running engines.

Are you absolutely emamoured with the thing?
Willing to spend large only to have it subsequently break it's transbox and likely itself 'expring' soon after
Asking, as it wasn't a Great design. All bleats aside. Doesn't have near the cachet of a TZ engine.. truth be told.
Not a place I'd be spending large or putting MY hopes into

It's a great engine, once sorted out. The bike it belongs in Falls way short.

RZ500 engines are rare now, as are engine parts. Rebuild cost is pricey, as you'd expect for a V4. $4000 is a good number to work with for a full rebuild. More or less depending on condition. There are no new cranks and max cylinder bore is 58 mm. Both of those can cause problems. If your engine wasn't properly stored, as in prepped and sealed and in a controlled environment you should expect surprizes when the engine is opened. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. That is the rule we live by.

Ignore what Bare says.

I have 3 engines. They are not for sale. :smt010
