Gearbox oil everywhere

#1 Post by mkane » Thu Nov 27, 2014 9:58 am

Went riding yesterday. There's gear lube all over the back of the bike that seem's to be exiting the breather. Would this suggest a seal problem? Thank's.

Check the level and color of your trans oil.

Is it over filled? Has it taken on the color of your 2 stroke injection oil?

Mine did this. It was the oil pump seal letting 2 stroke oil pass in to the transmission. The green "mixed" oil would come out the breather even when it was parked. It also ruined a set of clutch plates.

Good luck!

That's the problem, thank you very much. It doesn't smell like gear lube anymore and it way over full. What else should I change while I'm in there? I haven't looked at the book yet. Sounds like an easy fix.

The 2T tank should have dropped a lot. Is that the case?

Mine did this, the oil pump seal backed out of its bore (after 20000km!) and dumped a liter of Amsoil into 1.5 Liters of recently changed Motul Transoil. :smt013 . At least I got to reuse the recently changed synth coolant.

If the pump seal isn't out of place I'll perform a pressure test. Smell's like injection oil and the gearbox is overfull.

Finally addressed this issue. The seal was not in it's bore. To bad there's not some kind of retention devise for the seal. This will probably happen again. I have a spare seal.

Mine had about 20000km on it when this happened. After putting the new seal in I used a prick punch to stake the edge of the bore. Nothing crazy, just enough to stop it coming out on its own.
