It took a buddy and me an afternoon. We both have two kids. Does that count?
Nice upgrade, even better with an FZ swing arm and rear wheel. You'll have a completely (comparatively) modern rear end after that!

Re: Vintage Kenny Roberts race video.
The announcers were making me laugh. You could tell Mike Spenser's comments were given to him on paper with big letters. They were pulling the string out of his back when it was time for him to say something. No offense to the ex-racer!

Re: Is the Push/pull throttle cable necesary?
Is the general consensus to remove these? I have a new one installed but feel if it operates well without, it could unclutter the carb cable area under the tank. Do you feel that it is good insurance in preventing your engine racing out of control into a meltdown?

Leaking thermostat joint
Sorry if this has been covered before - it didn't come up in my searches. My new top end has resulted in a leaking thermostat joint. I carefully masked off both mating surfaces of the head and joint before I painted them. There are no gaskets between them so is the thermostat gasket (it didn't look ...

Re: New Slide Needles
Wouldn't you know... I clamped the vacuum line and got a nice warm up. Ran her for about 5 min. Smooth and sounds really good.
Now I need to find a thread about thermostats.

No! Didn't know to do that.gpaddict wrote:if you are running off of an aux tank, did you plug the vacuum line?
The shiny new vacuum line is just coiled up on the side waiting for the tank to be mounted.
I hope that's the problem.

Re: New Slide Needles
Is the vacuum line from the other carb the one that goes to the second nipple on the petcock? How does that all work if I'm using an auxiliary tank?
If it doesn't resolve itself I'll utilize the manual for air/idle screw info. Thanks

I've completed my first top-end rebuild on my '84 RZ350 US model. I also rebuilt the carbs, refreshed the PVs, put in new fuel and oil lines, plugs, coolant hoses, repainted cylinders and heads, and maybe other stuff I'm forgetting. I'm attempting some heat cycling and she's running rough. Both cyls...

Re: Power Valve Couplers
Two questions:
How does one ensure the powervalve halves align with one another?
When reassembling PV system, would a touch of red grease be good in the bushings?

Engine Paint
Since I've got time and everything is apart, I should probably paint the cylinders/head. As it is there is virtually no paint on the cylinders and the head is chipped around the bolts but mostly intact with what appears to be gloss black. This bike will never be a show bike but I don't want to do a ...

NO! Rebore to the First! oversize. Not the second (the 64.50) There are Only 2 overbore size pistons sold by Yamaha. These are THE best quality pistons money can buy. Then one is forced into Aftermarket ones..All of varying and lesser quality. Why throw away one rebore possibility Unless it's genui...

Re: Nasty Powervalves
What process did you use to clean them? I was careful to to not remove any material. I dunked them in Berryman Chem-Dip for a few hours and was able to wipe most of it off. I used a steel toothbrush (not sure of the real name) and carb cleaner for the more baked-on carbon. And the few impossible sp...

Re: NEED to disconnect the Power Valve coupler b4 cyl remova
Actually, no. Just seals and massive cleaning. They look in good shape. Probably mistaken by thinking all the rich-ish running and blowby somewhat preserved the internals.RuZty wrote:Did you have to replace PV's or bushings?
