when you purchase new cases they have no number, maybe those cases were stamped with the pre-fix from the case supplier and the dealer was suppose to stamp the rest of the vin on the case but had no stamps. if I was trying to figure out how many were made I would try and locate the supplier, Yamaha does not cast their own parts, so those dies are out there somewhere its just finding them, now I'm sure they wouldn't fire up the kiln for us but if they are better at records than Yamaha they could say we made X amount for production and X amount after for parts, Ming Ming is a big one in Taiwan I would start there, Yamaha has a bunch of suppliers and they are not secretive but are loyal to them I found this out, but everyone from when you have pipes stamped to cases formed they keep the dies, this is why Toomey has no stamps Factory did the stampings probably and every year you need to make 100 stampings or they reuse your kurtsite (I think thats the spelling) and toss out your tooling pipe, Koyo would not make me crank bearings and I'm sure that co. would not recast that case for us, but if someone had someone they knew at Yamaha Japan they could find this info out, and if we could get those dies we could re-machine for bigger reeds in the case and the rest they say is history, who knows this guy?
Hi Mark, there are quite a few RD500 owners in the Netherlands, I know at least four other people who have them.danahi wrote:Hi,
I don't know any rd500 owners in the Netherlands but there are some (I've seen them a few time's over the years). I'm guessing the 1GE model is standard for the Netherlands but I'm not sure.
Mark
I got two RD500's myself, another guy I know had at least 12 of them!!!.
About searial numbers, I don't think you can speak about early or late production numbers.
The two bikes I own are both 1GE models with serial 2290 registred on 21-september-85 and number 0004 registred on 04-Oktober-85.
It looks like they were produced randomly because there is no way that they sold nearly 2300 bikes in a short period of time.
Both bikes carry the same engine/frame number and the 0004 is waiting to be put together while the other one has a big hole in one of the pistons since last saterday
The 0004 bike has the European style colors like Marks while the other one has the Canedian style red/white stripes.
Cheers, Edwin

The date a bike was registred has no bearing on the date it was made.Yamaha made 500`s in 1985 that did not get registed until 1988 There is no way the bikes were numbered at random. The two bikes I own are both 1GE models with serial 2290 registred on 21-september-85 and number 0004 registred on 04-Oktober-85.
That would mean that they did not ship these bikes first made, first out.jackson.40 wrote:Welcome to the group rdpower.

Both bike have original Dutch registration.
For the 0004 it would mean it is a very early production bike????
