re aussie/ z serial numbers

#3 Post by oNo » Sat Mar 14, 2009 1:28 pm

I have a wee problem with the said numbers according to the letter Aussie RZ's eg 53g start at 53g-004101 , the problem I have is all my rz 500's are aussie / nz new (i brought my first one either nov 1984 0r 1985
thinks it was 1984 after the Aussie 6 hour won by Doohan but Before the NZ 6hour won by a gpz900 sadly my mate brought the gpz and I had to eat humble pie for years to come  ) but I have 2 x frames with the 53g-000-under 300 numbers both 4/84 (mk 1 's) plus a motor with 53g-000234 also mk 1 vintage all Aussie/ NZ just food for thought
2 stroke or not to stroke her

Hi Larry - I think the 6,632 was the total number worldwide, I guess not entering the US market (thanks EPA), curtailed production.

ONO - mine is an Oz import and sits at the high end of the 53G production range which would seem about right as it was registered in 86. The total number on the letter adds to 6,477 so 155 unaccounted for - this could be where you 53G's come in.

cheers.

The letter is a great find,it`s a shame that there is no info on the 47x and 1ge bikes.I will have a go at finding out more about these bikes from Yamaha.
So this is how the numbers breakdown.
RZV500 (51X) 3700 Made
RZ500 (52X) 2050 Made
RZ500 (53G) 882 Made

Mine is a 52X
So the number of 1GE and 47X is not part of that count, correct?

Interesting post, thanks.

It seems I have 1 of the 882 Aussie models here in the states.

I find the letter interesting in the RZ/RD designation, where it says Z= liquid cool, D= air cool. Do you RD500 owners have air cooled models? :smt017

lol......

I know what you mean, most people thought 1500
I think the number of 47x uk bikes is very low, in the first batch and around in the second batch before the first of the 1ge models got here in April 1985.

I find that statement interesting as well.
Mine is a RD500LC, my understanding 'LC' is for Liquid Cooled. :smt017
I think it follows the European market such as the RD350LC's.

I suspect that Yamaha kept the RD designation due to the populatity of their 250 and 400 air cooled models in the UK, when the first liquid cooled 250 and 350 bikes came out in 1980 they added the LC designation. and kept the RD when their first YPVS models came out in 350 and our beloved 500 versions.

I don't know about the rest of the world but there does n't seem many/any pre-power valve (4LO/4L1) RD350LC's in NZ.

Dave - yours will no doubt be from Europe.

Cheers
Mark.
