Slight update of sadly slow progress, house stuff got in the way through spring, and pretty darn hot since. And I have the energy of .... an old guy.
But it has been running. Hot weather, so starts from cold easily without the chokes. Have had an issue with upper left carb over filling/fouling plug/ gas leaking out. I wasn't enthused about pursuing, but removed float valve/seat and choke, reassembled, leak gone but still fouling that plug. So on a cooler day will do lotsa kicks with plugs out. Ran pretty nice on three without adjustment though.
The nice feature above for checking float height does have a clearance problem as the screws are on the side of the float bowl, so a bit of a pain; a screwdriver bit with a small wrench works though. Those flat feeler guage type screwdrivers fit, but not much of a turn before hitting stuff. Of course removal of a single carb is more pleasant than stock with the plate and linkages and linked fuel lines.
Soon ....

Not reading entertainment, but if anyone is considering this, pm with email address and I can send plenty of pics showing fit and what has to be modified etc

Slight update.
No new issues to attend to, just the process of gradually leaning out, a couple clicks at a time, from the original settings. This is so easy, and no messing with fuel lines/bowls/carb removal. But being cautious I'm checking plugs after each short test ride, as I have no experience with how much a click or two changes the mixture. Seems like not much - very fine adjustments, as still excessively rich with wet plugs after each low speed ride.
I picked up the check valves for the oil lines, but haven't installed as it seems its fuel, not oil, but that may be contributing. One thing at a time, and looking at the oil line diameter vs check valves, looks like a tight fit which might have me messing with that longer than expected.
And there's been a bit of dirtbiking lately to distract and wear out me as well.

Distractions are good once and a while!

Someone on the Facebook group is doing this conversion as well if anyone is interested; perhaps his progress will be quicker than mine - waiting for warm weather to get back to tuning, and perhaps a better solution to the chokes on the two tight carbs.

Thanks for coming back to this. It's quite interesting. If I had Facebook I'd have a look at the other one.

I do "view only" on FB, just dont want anything in their "hands".
Fella has quite a fine bike, ohlins bst etc.
To gain a little more choke lever clearance he's put those 2 carbs at a slight angle, with knurled pulls. I think he'll find he can't access them with the wilson air cleaners. But apparently he has lots of mikuni bits and cuts up cf and titanium, so expect he will come up with something that works well enough.

I had thought I'd posted this previously, but I guess not.
You need access to all 4 chokes even if you don't need them to start the bike.
The reason, as noted in the SC manual, is if the float bowl level gets low for some reason, when you turn the fuel on without the chokes opened, they may overfill and you will have fuel leaking out the carb. Which might be the issue you bought the carbs to avoid.. The choke acts like a bowl vent hose, which these carbs don't have.

Update - this had me thinking that maybe holding the throttle wide open when turning the petcock on may provide a vent through the rod, so I called SC, and yes, it appears this would be a solution to the choke access on those two carbs. The opinion was it might have a bit of trickle initially past the rod, but should stop.

Annual update - kinda embarrassing as "stuff" has taken most of my time and energy, and blah blah.
I didn't get back to the tuning until September, and have run out of warm days.
Anyways, continued the leaning process, and the bike was running finer than it ever has -up to about 7000 rpm.
So I ordered a different set of metering rods, richer grind for top end.
Replacing these, from the top of the carbs, while still mounted on the bike, was incredibly easy. Sadly the net result was no difference, so I'm thinking the adaptor rubbers I created to use the Wilson k&n kit may be the problem. Will have to get some sort of pod filters.
Running the carbs without cleaners would normally be a good test, but with the side mount I think the airflow across them may be increasingly problematic as speed rises

There is another person now with SC's on a very nice RZ, but last I heard it had only been idle tested. The prior fellow may still be building his - so no user experience to compare with.

You can always try the more dangerous thing, leaner on the top needles.

I had about 5" vent hoses on tm28's and was riding with no side panels so I could try with or without airfilters. It didn't seem to affect the running but I smelled gas after a blast through the gears. It wasn't a leak, it was siphoning fuel out the vent hose.
