Mirrors / Glass Removal

#1 Post by ChequeredFlagRacing » Sat May 15, 2021 3:42 am

Is it possible to remove the glass to tighten the mirrors pivot?

Not mine but from a group I use

RZVR, mine on the left is a little loose and whilst hurtling along at ‘break neck’ speeds....it sags. Anyone know a tip on how to tighten the pivot up?
Is it a glass out job??

Yes, gently warm the plastic edge and using a small glass suction pad gently ease it out.

As Vin above said, Warm the edges and remove the glass,
I replaced the both outer black with a new one from a XJ something....

The loose ones I have seen are loose because the conical shaped bit at the bottom of the knuckle joint has split and needs replacing. You can't buy this part on its own but there are plenty of period yamaha mirrors that can donate the part.

Temperature wise its as hot as your naked hands can take. A hot air gun could melt the surface of the plastic without careful use. Main thing is to get the plastic nice and flexible as the glass is a snug fit and easily broken.

Did a post on mirror refurb a few years ago if its any help.

Paul.

Paul, what did you actually use to warm the plastic case to remove the mirrored glass?

I also used a heat gun but on mine you can set the temperature accurately. If you are using a fixed temperature paint stripper type air gun they get up above 400°C and can boil the surface of the plastic if not used with care.

Thanks Paul,
I’ve got a heat gun with temperature control so that will sort the job.
I believe the mirror glass would be the same thickness as my 350LC which 2mm.
Any ideas of who can supply and cut mirror glass at 2mm?

The mirror glass is convex so getting one cut is tricky. I also tried a glass and parts from pattern mirrors, unfortunately flat/wrong shape/badly made.

Better bet is to search on ebay for yamaha mirrors from the same era that share the same shape mirror shell and glass. I recall its the FZ or FJ bikes that were helpful, but can't tell you the exact model.

I wonder if the glass from the reproduction mirrors available is the same size and shape?
