TZR 250 3MA

#1 Post by rz500guytexas » Wed Apr 07, 2021 11:05 pm

Who has one that has worked on it? Just purchased one for trips when at race track. This will be a stock rider. Any help will be apreciated.

Congrats, they are a special bike with a few special issues from what I've heard.

I've read that they tend to overheat due to the reverse cylinder layout. Are there other issues Dan?

It's on my wish list.

John, Our friend Too Smoked is knowledgeable about the 3ma. I think they are great bikes and like most, a few quirks I think. Rode my RZ500 along side him on his 3ma once and quite impressive and gorgeous. Almost bought one myself once. Should have..........

I talked to him for an hour last week. I'll make sure to ask 3MA questions next time.

Congratulations on the new member of the family! Yes I do own one still and it is a wonderful bike, the motor is silky smooth. Sadly its been a few years since I've ridden or worked on her but off the top of my head here are a few things I remember.

I believe they all came with a carb heating circuit, I disconnected mine straight away to uncomplicated things around the carbs and totally not necessary in my onion.

Be prepared to get at the carbs a lot while dialing in the motor, unfortunately to remove the air box you have to drain the coolant which really sucks. What a lot of guys have done is cut the air box tubes and join them with a piece of large hose. This enables you to leave the top half of the lower air box in place and only remove the lower part which gives you full access to the carbs thus not having to drain the coolant and remove the hose.

They tend to load up quite easily at lower rpms so they don't like to putt along too much, I found that ringing it's neck quite often helps keep its throat clear and makes for a fun ride too  it was better with stock exhaust but I'm running a set of Martin 77 pipes.

My friends used to call it the Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde bike because it was so quiet at lower rpms but turned into a monster once it came on the pipes and the PV opened up. (Dan, that was a great ride and way too many years ago my friend!!)

Rear rim is 18x4 so not too many good tire choices, I managed to get a BT090 (amazing tire) for it but I don't think their available anymore.

Feel free to ask some questions, hopefully I can help.

Cheers,
Nunzio

Thanks Nunzio

I looked at the 3MA parts list after we talked today and the massive airbox and carb heat hoses do make for quite a challenge. My TDR250 has carb heat as well, but it is a far more friendly set up and easy to work around.

For rz500guytexas,

Paul, I can email you the 3MA parts list if you need it. Shoot me a PM.

Thanks for response. Love the looks of the bike and wanted it for rides when at a track events. Something easy to move around as I get older. Cleaned carbs which were plugged on pilot circuits. Managed to find orings at hardware store for the float vave assembly. Had all adjusted and installed new hoses at carbs and fuel inlet. Unfortunately the petcock leaked but was able to start bike. Found out crankcase was full of gunk so blew it out with air. Left reed valve wedged open after flushing wit cleaner so will see if starts tomorrow. The carbs are complicated so once started will give a good check.

Gorgeous bike! It's a damn shame motorcycle styling is what it is now. They had it right back then.
