17" wheels

#1 Post by Almac » Sun Apr 05, 2020 4:19 pm

Ok, here goes, second question in chassis and hopefully get more responses

I'm in the process of fitting 17" wheels. I've got a front TZR 3XV and a FZR400 rim. The plan was to fit the 3XV, it's approximately 2kg lighter than the FZR. The issue I have is the physical strength of the rim, the spokes are thin in comparison with the FZR, I guess it is designed for a light bike.

Has anyone fitted this wheel to their bike without issue?

Thanks.

I have seen RZV's built in Japan that use TZR 3MA and 3XV wheels, forks and swingarms....Should not have a problem.
RZV fork internals are different from the RD/RZ so not sure if the upgrades you want are compatible.
I went with FZR1000 forks and triples....no antidive to worry about.
Save the original forks/wheels for the next owner.

I have seen quite a few Ducati 17 5.5 rear wheels used over there as well

Thanks busa.

I'm going with a XJR400 rear wheel, it's a straight bolt in job, just needs a couple of spacers.

The 3XV will probably be ok as you say but might just fit the fzr rim as it looks much more substantial.

I've got the racetech emulators and springs so will soon find out if it fits the RZV, hopefully it's just a change in spacer length to accommodate the pre-load adjuster.

You’re going to need to do something with the ride height in the rear with using a 17” wheel. Not only are loosing a 1/2 inch in total wheel height you’re also going to be loosing more height in the tire. Newer tires have a much shorter profile than the old 18” tires from the 80’s. So by the time you’re done you could loose as much as an inch overall. It not as simple as making it fit the bike now you have to make the bike fit it.

Thanks rzatch, I am aware of this.

I'll be fitting a 150/70/17 so will drop the rear by approximately 12mm, I'm fitting an adjustable shock to hopefully return the bike to, or close to, standard.

The front tyre will match the 16" in overall diameter. This is the easy stuff, knocking up a set of custom caliper brackets is a bit more of a faff.

Not a problem, most aftermarket shocks are good for 5-10mm in height adjustment doubt your going to notice 2mm. Good luck with your project.

I have seen guys use SDR 200 front rotors to fit the standard RZV calipers/forks.
Also TZ250/4DP Nissin calipers fit the forks and standard RZV rotors....

Thanks Busa, that's good info but I already have the discs & calipers.

I bought a pair of MT-07 silver spot calipers, thought the silver looks a bit more retro than the blue or gold and a set of 298mm RR discs.

I have a mill so no biggie with the brackets but in hindsight it might have been easier to pick up a set of gold spot radial mounts, a bit easier to retro-fit than lug.
