Ohvale 160 MiniGP Trackday bike

#1 Post by RC45 » Sun Dec 08, 2019 4:35 am

Speaking of pit bikes, I picked up one of these in October. The idea is to get myself in better track shape in a simpler cheaper way.

Ohvale 160 in the house :)

This is way more than just a 'pit bike' or 'mini bike'
It is intended to be used as a proper track & race bike
I just hope to use it to stay some what riding fit LOL :keke::shrug:

And IN the Tahoe >:)

Baseline dyno done. In stock broken in form, the little Ohvale puts 15.27 teeny tiny ponies to the rear wheel

The Arrow system is very light despite having a heavier header pipe - the silencer at 1lb lighter than the Yosh, weighs nothing and delivers pretty good peak power for a race oriented bike.

Despite the Yosh pipe not outgunning the Arrows on top numbers on this day (it is a 190cc pipe and maybe that makes a difference) it is down low that the Yosh pipe makes great torque.
Area under the curve baby!!!

Stay tuned for more!!

A closer look at the Ohvale chassis to appreciate the essence of the bike - it is a no nonsense Italian built race bike.

And just so as not to forget the main mission on hand, the Fireblade WSBK in a Shed build - 2 proper purpose built race bikes side by side.

Last minute decision to try catch an hour or so of track time on Sunday at SpeedSportz Racing Park and got some great introductory laps in.

The Ohvale really rewards commitment and harshly punishes sloppy riding, this is a fantastic rider improvement tool!

The Yoshimura RS9 pipe really had the bike pulling as well as 160cc can at any rpm in any gear. Corners I got right were sublime, for the ones in the wrong gear the bike didn’t bog.

2 other Houston Ohvales at the track - a 212 & a 190.

I definitely need to change to the K175 springs - it’s still running the K140 springs from the Talent Cup.

Added 1/2 hour to the engine hour meter, lost a couple fairing screws to vibration, discovered the bars need to be adjusted and my feet may be too big to use the GP Shift pedal comfortably.

Also learned 57*F is cool enough to get your attention on the PMT slicks if you don’t let them warm up - will be sure to run the tire warmers next time

The Alpinestars suit and airbag vest fit perfectly and were comfortable to use. The RST TracTech EVO R gauntlets were very comfortable and even with the heavy armor allowed reasonably quick finger movements.

Oh yeah, if you try squeeze in an hour of late afternoon fall track time, it’s possible to leave in broad day light and head home in the pitch dark. By 6:15pm.

I got myself an IMR 155 Corse which is not that HighEnd of the Ohvale, but a solid middle class SuperMoto Pitbike.
After the first rides I exchanged the front brake to a 4 piston Adelin caliper, R&D sintered pads and an Adelin 14 mm radial handpump.

Just today I had the second indoor event.
Seems I got acquainted with the little beauty as I wasn't overtaken the whole day ;-)
And that even though I use Bridgestone 601 SS without tire warmers (was too lazy as they had 2 groups at 10min each).

On December 28'th they'll do a 3h race which I'm looking forward to.
Bye

Looks like a lot of fun on 2 tiny wheels

I had the opportunity to try racing such small bikes some time ago.
Honda NSR50 and Yamaha TZM50
Did not expect that it makes so much fun as I'm a bit taller than the Japanese owners of the bikes.
It was really exhausting and the fun level was the same or even higher than on the big bike.
Always shifting up and down to keep the 50cc engine alive, braking hard into corners and put the knee down :smt005

And it's cheap with low risk.
Crashed the NSR one time because of the footpeg touching the ground but nothing was damaged.
The owner told me later he crashed it 7x before this day :smt003
Maybe he should switch to other footpegs...

Yes, we were a team of three riders.
A friend from the twostroke scene (he has a CR 250 Supermoto) and a girl from the Supermoto scene who lives nearby (she races in an amateur Supermoto series).
Unfortunately my friend was on a pitbike for pretty much the first time. He threw it away two times in training and later missed some 10-12 s latime compared to the rest of the bunch.
That was kind of unexpected. At the last twostroke meeting he was almost on my RD level with his CR.

We other two weren't too bad. The top team raced at some 31.x s and we had a 33.2 s as best lap which was comparable to the majority of the teams.
During the race the track became more and more slippery as the bikes collected the kart tire rubber from the ground. In addition ground temperature was only 5 deg C which brought us one crash during the race.
The good news : nothing broke, so we could continue racing.

The other teams crashed on a regular base and some even left their bikes disfunctional, so we ended up as 4'th in the 155cc class and 5'th overall. I'm satisfied with that result regarding that we lost around 30-40 laps due to our weak rider.

The next race is on January 12'th, but that's too soon for me. I need to repair the broken brake fluid reservoir and get some better tires.
The winning team ran Mitas MC 35 Supersoft and they were visibly better than the Bridgestone 601SS that I had.

The plan is to go there around once a month and thus my next ride will be on January 25'th.

Have run the Mitas MC35 Supersoft for the first time.
What should I say. First of all it's not the best idea to run brand new tires indoors.
It takes ages until they work - fortunately I didn't crash but had a kind of Marquez style save from a huge rear sideslip angle.

After that I wasn't as eager as usual, but still just one of the instructors overtook me (and just one time for the whole event).
The three groups were rather empty this time, so I was offered to do two groups for the same price.
At the end I had far more than 2h seat time in a 4h event. Man that was exhausting!

Concerning the tires: I was using a rather high pressure of 2.5/2.7 bar which is what Mitas recommends for cold indoor floors.( Other racers run them at 1.6 )
Running the same speed than the Bridgestones they didn't slip but after that near-crash right at the beginning I surely didn't use the full potential...

This winter's season I've been to 4 events and at least one is due til spring.
Which makes it almost as much indoor track days in 4 months than I do outdoor in the other 8.
If that's not addictive ...

Last weekend there was the German Pitbike Open Challenge at my home kart track nearby.
The Friday before the event there was free practice for everyone, so I took my IMR 155.

Well, that was a depressing event. Outdoor the 12hp is MUCH to low - got overtaken all the time and wished for more punch.
Beforehand I had put brand new PMT slicks on, but even in cornering those guys were significantly faster.

When looking at the timing, I knew why: The fast guys on Bucci Motos (which are comparable to the Ohvales) had some 54.x laptimes. The best I did on that track with my 76 rear wheel hp RD350 was 55.2s. With the IMR it was only 1:02min....
In 2001 we finished a 24h race on a 125cc KTM Supermoto as overall second and first in class with times in the 1:02-1:06 range.

For a direct comparison:
Onboard from the 350 with some 56.x laps
https://youtu.be/sewVakcsN_E

Onboard from the IMR with around 1:02min
https://youtu.be/RBDDeDlVgCU

I'm on that track since the early 2000's and never had an event where I was overtaken that often!
(on normal track days I'm usually in the top third)
Either I'm getting old or these young Pitbike folk know how to handle their equipment.
Bye

Try a yz80 engine, it will make you want to go faster.
This engine puts you (me anyway) to sleep.
