Seat pad foam

#1 Post by JonW » Thu Jul 04, 2019 9:05 pm

Happened across these guys on ebay, seems they are remaking foams for various bikes. Ive asked if they have plans for the 500...

I followed your lead here and inquired the prospects of them making a replica pad for the RZ/RD/RZV500 and the reply was they would need to sell a minimum of 100 pads to cover the costs of setting up production. Maybe if more ask they’ll consider it?

My local prototype supplier can do exact replicas of the original pad but they will cost a bit more than the ones in the link.
They are made out of 2 parts.

If there is interest I could scan mine and ask for prices.
I guess it will be something around 100-150€, but then they will be a 99-100% copy of the Yamaha part.

The idea of a 99-100% copy is the way to go I think.

FB - Im glad they came back to you, they totally ignored me :(

First step is done...
Tomorrow I will do the CAD model and forward it to get an offer.

Had to make it white for scanning - on the rear side it`s not possible to wash it off after scanning :smt013 :smt011
I think I have to paint it black again with some plastic color.

Wow. Crazy price on the NOS pad, but that's where we're at now days.
I have no doubt someone will buy it.

I'll wait on Speed Freak. I try to buy all the stuff he makes and sells. Haven't actually used any of them, but glad to have extra parts that are hard to get.

Thanks for doing what you do, Speed Freak!

Let`s see what will be the offer from the 3D printing company (positive model for a mold).
My fear is that it will cost the same as the NOS part.

Mine is in quite good shape but not good enough for a reproduction.
It has some cracks and small chips in the leather structure which will be visible if I make a mold from it.
Don`t know if I can somehow repair it with some smart repair stuff.
I don`t want to destroy a original part which is in good shape...

Is there no way in the software to repair the chips and overlay a 'clean grain' pattern over the surface instead of the current 'surface pattern'?

Sure, I already have the clean parametric CAD model which fits to 99% to the scan (maybe +-0,2mm in some places where the hardware part is not perfect)

Next step is to get a "right" leather leather structure on it to get it printed.
I`m sure one of the CAD systems where I have access to can do that but up to now I did not need this function.

I already asked for an offer to apply the leather structure and print it.
To get the right structure it can`t be printed on a cheap FDM printer so the print will not be in the XX€ range, more around XXX€ :???:
