Registering an RZV500 in Alberta, Canada

#1 Post by Spag » Tue Jun 18, 2019 11:41 am

Looking for input. . . . . .

I have bought an RZV500 frame for my project build and it is currently on it's way from Japan to Alberta, Canada. I already have two Canadian spec RZ500's that have the usual 17 digit VIN stamped on the headstock, the VIN decal and the round "CMVSS" decal on the side of the frame by the headstock but the RZV only has the 9 digit VIN and no other decals to prove it conforms to Canadian motor vehicle standards (or any other country for that matter) and I'm unsure how the bike, once built would pass the Alberta Out Of Province inspection (OOP) just because it only would have a 9 digit VIN, no CMVSS decal and no VIN sticker on the frame?

From an import perspective, it should clear customs ok but it's the inspection that could be the issue due to the lack of VIN and CMVSS decals, once I have built the entire bike.

I have the original Japanese title that states the date of manufacture as April 85 and the seller translated it into english for me in an email ( but not in a legal sense or notarized). It was built in the second batch of RZV500's and uses 1GE parts.

Is there anyone within Canada that has imported either a complete RZV500 or just a frame and managed to get it legally through an inspection and road legal???

Thanks,

Tim

If you have the Orange Japanese Ownership you will be able to register it as an RZV in Canada. If you don't, you can still register it but it won't state RZV where it specifies the model of the bike on the Ownership There are multiple steps required to accomplish this. 17 digit VIN is a requirement for vehicles imported by and sold new here by Yamaha Motor Canada, Honda Canada etc.. Likewise for the CMVSS and VIN sticker. I have several JDM VIN's registered here, the key being they are Imported 15 years after date of Manufacture for Canada and 25 years for the US market.

I have the original Japanese title along with a bill of sale that both state date of manufacturing as April 1985 so it’s over 15 years old.
