I just read your submission to the December edition of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics. I can appreciate what you felt when you saw the engine corrosion and turned your back on the project for 8 months. Many of us have been there.

The bike looks terrific.

Hibernation mode once again....hope to get jetting, ignition and powervalve setting finalized once it gets warm again.
I got tired of draining the tank to get the carbs off....a 3MA4 fuel pickup is in my future.

"tired of draining the tank"
that got old real fast, especially with trying to fix forever leaky carbs (I won't put it in the basement because of that).

anyways, with the "luther" mod working, and the wilson bracket for the petcock - it turns off proper, and with two bolts the petcock comes off with the tank.

My carbs don't leak, but that is also a problem I worry about having.
A 1990 3MA fuel tank pickup/filter has an on/off lever with two outlets exactly like the 500.
So when pulling carbs for jet change, I can turn the tank tap off and only drain the float bowls...or when storing bike for a while.

After trying to get my bike running like I thought it should run....I gave up for the season last year.
I was trying too many things with no real improvement.
Checked and rechecked everything over and over....and basically got nowhere.

So.....
I bit the bullet and bought an Ivans needle/jet kit, which showed up today in the mail.
And was sent a set of genuine N-8 needle jets by a very helpful member here, several months ago....(to replace the Yambits generic O-0 jets)
I have 3 weeks forced vacation by the state starting today.....so I have time to finally get this bike running as good as it possibly can.
After then finding that point, I will take to a dyno and set up the powervalves and tweek ignition if necessary to get a little more....which is usually never enough :smt018

Hopefully with the free time, I can get the TZR SP dialed in too..... As I really only was able to get it running right, when winter came early last year.

A bit rough around the edges, but all the correct SP parts intact and working.
It's a survivor at this point.

The edges look fine from here .
One of those without the frame done black would be just right. To me. others may prefer the change.
My conundrum in tzr's haha

Thanks :smt023
I personally hate painted aluminum frames....I think it would look much better clear anodized like the TZ250 3YL/4DP.
Like this http://pure2strokespirit.net/redandblue ... ure_jp.pdf
But my 3XV2 is too complete and rare to change something like that ....although all the 94' 3XV's had silver painted frames.
Still not as good as bare aluminum though. :smt007

I don’t know I think I have to disagree with you busa. It’s just something about the whole package that separates your bike and makes it so good looking. I think with a silver frame it would get lost in the pack.

This one will stay black as long as I own it.
It just makes me want to get a TZ250 3YL/4DP even more now .... :smt003

I installed the Ivans needle kit, along with genuine Mikuni N-8 needle jets...(Originally had N-6/N-8 jets)
When I went to unrestrict last year, the only needle jets I could find were generic O-0 jets....

Bike ran OK, but not like I had expected/hoped....but I thought maybe it was because it was only 42 degrees outside.
Then I took off the Zeel ignition, and put the original back on with the stock powervalve control.
Checked where the valve is fully closed......and as I had somewhat expected....the Zeel was not closing to the same point.
So I put the Zeel back in, and reprogrammed it to close more, until it stopped at the same point the original box did.
And it has been snowing for the past few days since....snow melting today....maybe Monday it will be dry and above 50 degrees and I can see if I am any closer to happiness.
