I can understand it...
I made the engine stands and 2 went to the USA.
Both parcels arrived completely destroyed, one with missing parts.

Not one of the other parcels worldwide had the same issue.

47X-83378-00 Stay, horn

can someone confirm that this bracket should not be twisted like on the pictures?
I don`t want to have bent parts in my database...

Hi Michael,

The one I have is straight (47X).

Thanks for the info.
I should have 2 more, maybe one of them is straight.

The scanner likes "organic" round shapes...

Raw scan data (only marker holes filled):

Seat pad was also an easy thing for the scanner.

Scan (raw)
Even the leather structure is visible (way better than expected)

Very nice work, it's the clamps that put it over the top!

There was a reason to buy the 3D scanner.
I was not happy about my measuring methods. Too inaccurate especially when it comes to stepped bolt patterns etc.

As I`m alone at home at the moment (wife and daughter are not here during the week) I started to scan parts where I know that they are not as good as I want them to be.

This is the starting point:
To be honest, better than expected.

And now:

Not perfect as I did not do all the draft angles in the beginning (and I don`t want to completely change the part again...) but the bolt pattern is right and all the contact surfaces to other parts are correct.

Time for a new challenge...

As mentioned I have time now to focus on some work without getting disturbed every 10min.
Best time to scan the most challenging parts with the scanner - big parts with small surfaces (welded pipe construction).

A first test without any markers showed a poor result as the alignment of the single scans doesn`t really work on such parts.
Next option would be to put a lot of marker stickers onto the part which is time intense and the markers itself aren`t cheap besides the sticky residues they leave on the part (bad for sand blasting later).

I started to experiment with a "marker base plate" which is basically a piece of paper with markers printed on.
As long as the part is not moved on the sheet the alignment is quite good if the scanned object is not too far away from the spots and the view to the markers was not too flat or too steep.

With big and complex parts where a lot of scan views are needed this will get annoying as the scanner doesn`t recognice enough of the spots.

First improvement was to make the background gray instead of white, otherwise everything is overexposed and it doesn`t capture the geometry really well.
Maybe I can make it even darker than it is now.
Second improvement was to build this little helpers:

Image

They add a 3rd dimension to this marker base plate which leads to a better accuracy.
The hexagonal shape ensures that there are always markers with the right angle to the scanner to get captured.
Of course every part needs to have an unique marker pattern, otherwise it will place the scan in the wrong position.

Image

Still some room for improvements as I need a higher "dome" for the upper area but it works really well...
Just did some experimental scanning.
Image

Tomorrow I will create some "adapter" hexagonal domes to create a flexible system where I can create domes with individual heigth.
Once they are created in CAD I can print them again and again, cut them on my plotter and they are ready in 10min.

Would be a nice option to judge if the fairing stay is bent or not if I could get a good one as a "base scan".
Mine is not the best sample. Some of the small brackets are definitely deformed as the bike had a crash on the left side.
Nothing serious as the base construction seems to be fine but it`s enough to drop the 200kg+ bike onto the oil tank to bend all the brackets around it and also the mirror/indicator brackets.

Not perfect but good enough. At least the alignment of the scans should be good enough.
Maybe I will do a second scan tomorrow... Still learning how it works better.
