Radiator Expansion Tank Pipe Routing?

#1 Post by Vin » Wed Jan 09, 2019 1:07 pm

Hi guy's, I'm building a standard 1GE but not sure about the standard routing of the expansion tank pipes? the parts list shows just two pipes one to the rad cap and one to overflow however the one I have has a t-piece and loop around the filler cap also?

Anyone have a picture of the standard set up for the 1GE and is it different on the various models?

I went with a different overflow bottle for my custom bike, but I found this OEM example on ebay when doing my research. It appears the tees are added for a clear "sight tube" since the OEM tank is not translucent (need to check the level somehow, right?). The sight tube looks rather brown in this picture.

Of course, the bottom tank hose (which would connect to open tee that looks sort of green in this picture) goes to top nipple on the fill neck (closest to the cap). The top tank port/hose dumps to the ground should the overflow tank ever, well, overflow. Mostly, it just allows air to move in and out of the tank with varying coolant levels when hot and cold.

Standard? You feeling ok Vin?

47X tank is black and uses the 'T" fittings and multiple hoses. 1GE tank is translucent green and does not use "T" fittings. 1GE is very simple with only 2 hoses and no fittings. One hose to the rad cap and one hose for the overboard drain.

Check the parts list for 47X and 1GE. The difference is shown clearly there.

Maybe wrong side? The oil tank uses this T-piece stuff.

Coolant expansion tank (1GE bike):

And here the oil tank:
The T connects the degassing line from the lower tank and the overflow line from the top tank (which is a 180° pipe piece). A common pipe is routed along the left frame rail down to "nowhere"

This is the 47X coolant tank parts list http://www.rzv500r.net/Tech_docs/47X-PL ... ge_12.html

This is the 1GE coolant tank parts list http://www.rzv500r.net/Tech_docs/RD500- ... ge_013.jpg

As you can see, the 47X is a jumbled mess of connectors and pipes.

Many thanks for the info guy's :smt023

I guess you never stop learning building a standard bike from a project bike :smt017 and yes John who would have thought

Who would have thought, indeed, Vin. I haven't been on this forum long, but I don't recall you ever building anything standard. My experiece has been that it tends to be more diffiult than expected. Add the 47X/1GE differences and getting it perfect can be a challenge. Handlebars, oil tanks, coolant tank, air box parts, top clamp, pipes, belly pan, forks, etc. There is a lot to sort out to get it 100% correct 47X or 100% 1GE.

The standard vs modified dilemma is where I am now with this 47X chassis. This was an eBay purchase I made in 2012 and has been sitting here in storage ever since. Build it standard or build it modified? Do I please myself and build a naked modified bike or please everyone else and build it for the highest value as a 100% standard restoration? I have everything here (including your solo tails) to go either way. All the proper 47X parts have been found and bought (if only I could remember what they are). All of the parts for a naked bike have also been located and bought. I managed to buy the numbers matching engine for this chassis several months later in 2012 on Kijiji.

I need someone to make up my mind.

+1 on that!

I was searching for stock overflow bottle information a few weeks and ago. Who would have guessed that if I had waited a bit, everything would have been answered in one thread. I will say however, I choose the right direction with my overflow bottle... those bottle mounts shown in these pictures don't even exist on my bike!!

Many thanks for everyone's generous outpouring of information on this forum. I know how long it takes to gather up the info, post up pictures, and add commentary.

Oh, and silverstrom… its sounds like you're only a few parts shy of building both! Another option perhaps?!?

I was considering that option. I did that with an 1990 RZ350 not long ago. Modified and naked, but boxes and boxes of stock parts to put the bike back to 100% original.

It was a stroke of luck. I just happened to be on Kijiji and recognized the seller's location. The engine had previously sold on eBay (before the rolling chassis did) and was completely stripped and the guy shipped it to the US in 4 boxes. He completely fooked it up and some boxes were grabbed at the US border for EPA issues and others returned to the seller. When the seller finally got all of the boxes back he put it on kijiji. I bought the engine in pieces, just as he shipped it to the US.

If you want to know learn how to build an engine or build a bike start with all of the pieces in a pile. By the time you figure out how it all goes together you'll be quite good at it.

That sounds like fun Silverstrom. I'm pretty sure you already have a standard bike. Definitely go with your heart and build the special you really fancy [emoji106].
