RZ500cc restoration

#1 Post by Jarrettvp » Mon Jan 18, 2016 6:26 pm

Hi. I've just imported my dads RZ500 into the UK from Australia. He bought it to restore back to new, but sadly passed away before he could finish it. Now it's my job to complete it. Anyone know where I can send the engine for a rebuild ?

Also, I'm informed that it's the second bike ever to be registered in Australia. Can anyone tell me if I can verify that. The frame number is 000102. This number suggests bike number 102.

Cheers.

Hello and welcome to the group

If the frame number is 53G000102 it's the second production bike made for Australia/New Zealand

Have a go at the engine yourself, you will find lots of help here.

Any photos?

Steve

Hi - thanks. I registered with this great forum to get lots of help. I'll need it !

The frame number is 53G000102.

I'm not sure what state the engine is in, but the bike is in good condition. I'll post some pictures. The carbs are off it and have been refurbished (and carefully wrapped in cling film). My intention is to refurb it back to original (as much as possible).

Welcome to the group.

Where are you located? I've got some good sources for service near Sydney if you're close.

I think Steve's correct, you will be surprised how you will be able to manage the engine yourself.

Take loads of photos as you taking it apart, get items checked your unsure of, and ask lots of questions on the forum.

Use Yamaha parts as much as possible, gaskets etc.

If not there are plenty of people who can help you out, Stan Stevens of course, but there are others like New Era in Leicestershire, Jason, who is great, always does things quickly and very competitive.

Hope this helps a little

Best wishes and sorry for your dad's passing. Hope he gave you the base to continue his passion. As I get older i hope a younger generation will continue keeping these great bikes an interest for everyone. Sad to see a Kawasaki H2 pull 14K and a nice RG 500 pull 12K at auction. Better sound, suspension, and a racing heritage. plenty of help here and take the bike for what it is and do some simple upgrades.

Thanks for the overwhelming support messages. My brother and I come from great stock and he gets the brand new RD 350 LC and I get the RZ500. Both have all Yamaha original parts and as my dad always used to say - "if you don't do it properly, its not worth doing". I am excited to get started!

First technical question - How do you upload a photo of less than 1 Meg?

Use a hosting service such as Photobucket. Then copy/paste the Photobucket link. That would be the bottom of the 4 links they give you.

You can attach a photo here using the link provided here but max size is 256k.

Great that you're doing the bike. Very inspirational. Your dad would be proud.

Thanks for the tip. Hope you enjoy looking at this as much as I do. I am looking to do the first job this weekend and that is take the fairing off and get some of the eyelets repaired. Then fit the carbs back on. I have a photocopied Haynes manual, so will refer to that until I get stuck. So I may be coming to the forum for help.

If you are repairing body panel parts such as tabs or cracks try this product. Works great and is easy to use. For some reason the rear covers are a different plastic and will not hold. Everything else is good. http://www.plastex.net/Home_Page.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
