YZF,FZR suspension swap.

#1 Post by Dieseldale » Fri May 16, 2008 4:04 am

Hello again from newcomer. When i recently purchased my RZ500 i also bought some suspension mods, here goes; '94 YZF750 swingarm, etc and rear brakes, FZR750 forks with aftermarket valving,yokes, fender and rotors. I plan to have Steve mod the swingarm to fit, and the forks are pretty straightforward as Ken Smith told me when I bought the bike from him. I found some new calipers on ebay and a used master cylinder for the front brakes. Ordered braided stainless lines front and back teserday. I also managed to scare up some decent used FZR1000 wheels front and back in need of paint for $120 for both. (wanted the wider rubber 8-) ) Whew... thats what I have so far. My question is what you guys think of this setup, just want a feel for what you experienced fellows think. Anything you see to be a bad idea? Welcome criticism, good or bad. My next step to the dilemna is sprockets...what ratios, chain size, brands, etc. Ken said he uses 520 chain but Im not sure what years, models sprockets fit both the engine and my swingarm, wheel, tire etc. And since Ive seen posts for guys using YZF swingarms i figured there might be someone to point me in the right direction. What ratio is stock and what is stock chain length and size? Im too lazy to sit and count teeth and links. Thanx for any help.

Dale,
Sounds like a good plan. I've used 520 chains and sprockets as well. Early R1 front sprockets fit right on. I'm running 15/40 on one and 15/42 on another and I've got 17 inch wheels a 180 and a 160. Both these seem to work out pretty nicely and there is no big difference in performance. The motors are both ported and have pipes. Keep asking questions, the guys have a ton of knowledge and experience.

Diesldale,

If it'll help I have the part numbers for the front and rear sprockets
that work with the YZF 750 swingarm conversion.

Dale;
The Ft end I sold you is a YZF750 'think it's a 96, so it works well with the swing arm. I mod the ft end to take the R1 brakes (not to hard just need to grind a small section) I'm sure you can handle it. The ft end swap is a snap, just press out the YZF stem press out the RZ stem and install it into the YZF bottom triple clamp. Change to the RZ500 tapered bearings and bolt together.
Still haven't gotten around to installing the Penske shock and taking pics. maybe tomorrow.

Hey Ken,
OOOPS, been thinking it was an FZR. hope the FZR wheels I got coming to me will still work :sad: Also found some very clean and cheap FZR calipers and master cylinder, will they work too? Yea actually already have old stem out of yoke and got that ignition switch out. Piece of cake. Yea that shiock will real nice on there...almost a shame it ahs to be mounted way down where you never see, thats definitely a part oon my wish list. sent those chambers to Jet Hot too, hafta post pics when done to see who made them. Have your friend Steve coming to check out the RZ350 and the RD400 in the morning, Thanks for giving him my number Ken.

You may want to try Sprocket Specialists for sprockets with different chain size. I have never been disappointed with them.
Just get a chain a bit longer rhan you think you'll need and cut to length.

Dale;
Most of the FZR stuff will fit up. I know the ft wheel will, brakes should also. Just the YZF parts are a bit newer and work a bit better. May have to change the wheel bearings to fit the larger O.D. axle. There is a set of YZF750 wheels on e-Bay go off in a day or so. Have the rotors with and a set of tires with about 50% tread left. May be worth it in the long run to get them. Have a look as they will bolt right up and no nuts'ing around.
Yea; Steve called looking for a RZ350 and I didn't have any left. Thought you may sell yours, hope it works for everyone. Steve's a good guy, we've been playing motorcycle games for years. He's a 2 stroker from way back.

Thanks Ken. Yea I checked those wheels out but already bought the FZR wheels. so I'll make em work. Yea Steve is the proud owner of my RZ350, we were shootin the breeze for awhile while he was here, your right really great guy, glad someone like him got it. He'll appreciate it alot more than just some guy looking for a bike. He seemed realy happy, was real glad with how it was setup and all and the extras that went with it, had all kinds of books and info and parts and all. Now I have more cash for the RZ500... :D
