UK engine tuner

#1 Post by Mark » Tue Oct 09, 2007 3:17 pm

Hi guys, since Mr Yamaha deciced to make it a pain in the arse to change the powervalve seals I've decided on pulling the motor out.
So I thought when its out I may aswell get it tuned+checked.
Has anybody had personal experience of any UK tuners?
They all sound great in adverts but you cant beat hands on info.
:-?

I have used Stan Stephens in the past. He was blunt and rude - but did a bloody good job. His missus is very helpful and his boys seem to be up to the mark as well. It may well be I caught him on an off day. He has not moved his 'tune' on since the 80's for the RD5 - I spoke to them a couple of yeas back and he was yet to be convinced of doing more - as he said he could, he has the knowledge and tools, but wants his customers riding a reliable, high milage bike, not a superfast handgrenade. He has the facility to check, straighten and weld cranks etc. I know a few other people on here have used him and have been very happy.

There are a few who slag him off - not sure why.

If I were looking to have my engine checked and work done on it I would speak to him, although even his S3 tune seems mild compared to what some are doing.

I have a road test somewhere of one of his tuned bikes, if I can find it I could post it on here if you like.

Nice one Shafty old fruit. Spoke to Big Bob Farnham today and with all the bits I've got on it allready he reckons 100bhp should be no probs. He can do the bizz on the cranks too. Was a damn nice bloke on the phone.

Had mine done by Stan to stage 3 with a complete rebuild (and i mean complete) not cheap but all geniune parts used, as said above it isn't the ultimate tune but stan wants the engine to stay together, with the addition of exhausts he said to expect in the region of 100bhp. I've purchased lomas gp style exhausts.
For me i think 100bhp is enough to scare me and others, also none of us appear to be spring chickens so do we need more bhp ? (of cousre we WANT it but do we NEED it)

Just dug out the road tests. When compared to a std RD5 Performance Bikes found
Std RD5 84.4 BHP @ 9180
SS3 RD5 95 BHP @ 9291
RG500 93.8 @ 10,670

The SS tuned one had std pipes carbs etc.

The RD5 made 32 mpg on hard riding and 38 mpg cruising

The RG5 made 23 mpg hard riding 30.5 mpg cruising.

When Mat Oxley tested the Stephens tuned RD5 he got 26.4 / 31.8

Top speed (one way) was 152 and the mean was 149.5 - in the text they identify that it was not revving out in top and a change of gearing would have helped it both accelerate faster and get higher TS

Their dyno showed 98 BHP - again std pipes and carbs

Just in passing -

Should also add - the petals were changed for Harpower fibre petals, but Stan the Man reccomends changing them anyway - when a fibre petal breaks up they do less damage than a metal one (apparently)
