Strange twist with the usual brake upgrade

#1 Post by smokamoto » Mon Aug 28, 2023 2:08 pm

I finally did a typical front brake upgrade using early R1/FZ1 calipers & master cylinder with EBC floating rotors which many have done with no issues (far as I know). I ordered caliper adapters from NK Racing which are beautiful to behold.

Once installed I saw that the calipers were not centered on the rotors with 0.120” gap on one side & 0.0015” on the other. I wrote to Nigel who couldn’t understand what the issue was and that he’d sold dozens of these for over 20 years, which I’m aware. He had me measure the distance between rotor outside faces & I sent him 151mm. He said that they should be 131mm but then told me that was the spec for the RZ350 (never did say what the 500 should be).

Anyway, I sent the adapters back to England & he removed 0.055” off the insides to move the calipers out. After a month of returning/fixing/receiving, the final product fits much better, at least something I can live with.

Anyone else ever have this problem?

I would think anything that you would adapt to a different motorcycle will need adjusted or modified. Good to hear he knew what to do and did it. Last thing I want to question would be brakes and then suspension. In that order

I agree, it’s just strange that he’d never had an issue and it was just my set up that was way off, go figure

That’s good tacky, glad they bolted on for you with no issues, and your bike looks sweet!

When Nigel made mine (maybe 15 years ago), I sent the R1 discs and calibers to him, to make sure that the meassurements were correct.
I wonder if the first set of adapters he made was for me?
They did fit straight on, but they are not as smart looking at the more recent ones.
