1984 RZ500

#1 Post by mike257s » Fri Apr 28, 2023 2:58 pm

Hey guys, I just finished a complete engine assembly after a rebuild on a basket motor on a (Canadian) 1984 RZ500.
I fired it up today, started 3rd kick. Whoop! A bit of a warm up, popped the choke off and she idled beautifully. But! The oil light remains illuminated red.
I did some google searches as well as the search feature here on the forums, but nothing relevant to my issue that I could find.

Dumb question, but is the oil light for the gearbox oil or the reservoir for the injection lube? (assuming there is a sensor for the premix reservoir?)
Regardless of which, how would I go about chasing the issue? Oil levels are full.

Cheers from Sacramento Ca.

Good job on the engine.

Oil light is for injection oil low level alert. It's a simple circuit with the level switch in the tank providing a ground to the dash Oil light. Brown wire provides power to light. Black/Red wire connects between light and switch. Black wire provides ground to switch. Looks like oil in tank will open switch contacts and turn off light.

If I recall correctly, it will come on when ignition is first switched on (regardless of oil level) and then go out after few seconds if tank has sufficient level.

Give the man a cigar. Thanks. So that leads me to the next question -- I distinctly remember installing and connecting what appeared to be an oil sender and lead wire on the left side, under the counter shaft sprocket cover. Does that also connect to the oil light?

Hi Mike,
That's probably the neutral switch wire.
