YSR 80

#1 Post by podman » Fri Jan 15, 2021 1:17 pm

Anyone here have a wee YSR in their garage?

I've been bending a friends ear for a few years to sell me his and he finally caved in last September, he has 2 or 3 others now anyway.

Said friend had done on the chassis/paintwork some years back but the engine and items such as the brakes where untouched , after 35 years, looking their age.

As those that own one will know, some parts for these are hard to find and fetch just ridiculous money, some NOS items had to come from the states and Germany but engine parts availability is pretty good, even so, with lockdown(s) , much of it took a while to arrive.

Over the last coupe of months I had the engine refinished and built it up again with all new Gen Yam bearings, gaskets , clutch plates, fasteners and seals, all the old rubber lines replaced for new, new cables etc etc..Things like new grips, chain , chain guard, fasteners and the engine have really lifted the whole thing.

I also fitted the aftermarket pipe on it which sounds great! It'll do 65MPH downhill with me on it and 60 on the flat, ill be taking it to some meets this year for certain anyway, its far more comfortable to ride than my Ducati!

Very nice build. I have one I got from my Nephew. Before I got it a friend of his screwed around with it and I assume ran it without oil. Brilliant decision. I thought about throwing my CR125 LC engine in it as a mini street fighter but I'm thinking better to use any air cooled YZ80/100/125 for space/simplicity. They need more balls! Hey, I have a spare RG250 engine laying around!

Get it done!

I think there are more out there with engine conversions than standard bikes now, im happy with mine as it is...Ive seen them with 350 YPVS motors in them and most recent a RM250 MotoX lump.

My friends galouise bike runs a big bore kitted DT125LC lump (now 180cc) with a load of chassis upgrades, estimates it has around 30BHP...

Very nice bikes and thanks for sharing! I have one that I bought about 15 years ago for $200.00 that was in pieces. I finally got around to a full resto-mod about 3 years ago. I also have another that I'm working on now for my wife.

Thanks.

I read and commented on your build on Norbos forum, you certainly started out from a far harder point than me.

Does she run well with that 24mm carb?

I also have a calamari fork spacer/spring to add into the "empty" leg as well..

Runs great once you get it moving. It’s a little smothered on takeoff if that makes sense. I think the carb would be perfect for the 80. A little more power and cylinder volume

Nice YSR80, love the paint.

I should have mine painted to match the 500.

Just sold the black one.

Nigh on a year on, I thought id update this , Ive managed a few hundred miles on the YSR during the Summer with our little YSR clan, have had some great laughs and as memorable ride outs as my bigger bikes , its proved more reliable than my 2021 Triumph as well!

The Calamri pipe didnt fit brilliantly and really strangled the motor so I kept put the standard pipe back on with the aim of sorting it over the "off season"

Image

Many of these now have motor swaps and I can see the logic behind that but I wanted to keep the original motor so I dropped the bike off to Mick Abbey's a couple of weeks ago, Mick is a highly regarded Uk 2 stroke tuner, Mick applies the same attention to detail to everything has tuned as many smaller cc strokers such as DT50s and 80cc MX bikes, the smaller 185/200cc twins as the larger RGs/RDs and racebikes .

I decided to have Mick tune the bike and make one of his pipes to match, along with some Boysen reeds.

I particularly liked the fact he sought out some tubing to make the end can proportional to the size of the bike/system..and it all fixes using the OE mounting points, is tucked neatly out of the way and seals perfectly.

Alongside the fact he made some considerable power and torque gains, it now sounds like a proper little ripper...

Ive also been lucky with good friends who have knocked up new motormounts and other odds n sods which continue to make riding and owning it more pleasurable.

problem is its all got a bit serious (and expensive) now with braced swingarms, uprated suspension, carbon trinkets etc etc but its all good fun..
