Two Stroke Exhaust Pipes - Why? Why so heavy?
Hello,
I'm on my 2nd 2-stroke bike. I have a wrecked... WRECKED RG500. But never mind...
Why did the manufactures of of RZ500, RG500 etc etc. Make the exhausts out of such heavy materials when these bikes are supposed to performance machines? Plus with further consideration of how on some of these bikes the exhaust is so high.
Cheers,
T.

I think it was for noise control. The heavier metal isn’t as tinny and noisy. It dampens the sound.

Heat is one thing, I know the upper pipes on the Rz500 are doubled walled as too keep the seat cool.
With my JL pipes I am shocked at how hot the seat gets.

Just seems like a lack of creativity. Try some different materials, direct some airflow.

Easy to say now, but 35 years ago the options were limited and costs were very high.

Starting right about 1984 there were more lawyers in the product planning meetings at Yamaha than there were engineers.

Yes, I was shocked at how heavy the stockers were when I swapped over to Nikons. What an easy weight loss program (18 lbs if I remember right). The nikons also had a great top end. The other oversight with the stock pipes is the welds around the entrance are really sloppy and need to be trimmed back to provide a smoother and greater volume passage.
