My bike is finally a bike! Thank you

#1 Post by lost1750GTV » Mon Sep 14, 2020 10:39 am

thank you all, whether you are still here or not. The experts, the guys sharing their frustrations, the guys inspiring with great builds. Its all kept me going in a 2 year cant look at it again kinda thing, with every possible fuel leaking spot, and always running like crap, but running.
But this weekend I finally experienced what the oct 84 cycle mag referred to as "that engine" .. "plunges into the 10,000".
Yeah, you guys knew, thanks for keeping me going - and mentioning how many years some projects have taken.
It ain't perfect, 5-7 needs attention, but now I have something to chase instead of gas leaks.

I do not have a photo share site, and can't post direct.
Not a lot to see though, pretty much stock. basic white except front fender no stripes. Jolly standard pipes, cf silencers and k&n, fairing not installed, some extra bodywork not "hacked" yet.
Not a rusted out shed heap, but nothing like the restorations or customs on here.

thanks RC45 - but my paranoid too much time in tech wife has a thing about all media type sites - I'm lucky I'm even here haha

and to all of you for your kind comments - now that I've experienced it there should be some inspiration to do what I thought I wanted to do with it.
but first take care of that probably way lean 5-7 thing, although some more testing is required to be sure. don't want to go the wrong way and have to pull the carbs any more times than necessary. I'm pretty tired of that.

My bike is finally in a shop.
Took it in beginning of the week before the big N.E. snow - figured i wouldn't be able to do much now that the cold is ...well its supposed to be 50 for Christmas ...
Anyways, started with 220/230 mains per Bill Wilson(first post above) and worked my way down to supplied 200/210 - before concluding that the mains were probably ok (maybe can go bigger as some have, and Bill later mentioned). And the bogging/fouling was from the needle, which needs to be dropped with the bigger main jets.
Basically as I went down on the mains the upper mid rideability improved greatly but the top end diminished.
So now wanting verification on the dyno of what I should have been clever enough to figure in the 1st place - the jolly pipes and wilson k&n don't make much/any difference at lower to mid rpm and throttle openings. Stock breathes fine there.
Only at higher rpm/wide open throttle the filters allow the engine to pump more air in.
Will be interesting to see if the exhaust analysis verifies my current thoughts. Or tells me after lotsa carb off/on experiments I figured nothing out haha.
Along the way I also tried makeshift (copper plumbing) stinger extensions for the upper pipes (thought that might contribute to the issue) and swapping the long/short silencers top to bottom. No positive effect noticed, so I think the pipe people compensated somehow for the lack of a stinger up top, and looking at them doesn't seem wrong anymore.

I think I finally got it right - the dyno shop thing didn't happen, bike sat a month and a half untouched so I picked it up.
And resumed my slow efforts.
I'm sure someone else could get the carbs more right but -
It doesnt leak in garage, doesn't leak after a ride.
Starts cold and warm, idles etc. A lot of other stuff taken care of along the way, and yes, plenty to do still, but ...
Runs nice through the rev range, regularly to 10 in 1st and 2nd, and a couple times to 11 as I had read the jollies peak at 10600. This is with k&n from bill wilson, mains at 240/250 , carb settings otherwise stock.
So thanks again to all those who have helped, present and past posters, as it has all been helpful and kept me going through a lot of pondering and exasperation.

Sorry to hear you couldn't get the dyno run in. Sound like she is running pretty good though.

These bike can be frustrating at times, but if you keep at it, it all pays off!

Yes, running really good. Plugs say 240 upper and lower, but knowledge here says rich is a good thing for uppers, and I dont feel like doing it again just yet. And have only run up in 2nd so ...
A lot of stuff is a combination of it (and me) being old, coupled with prior owners. Weird stuff like lower motor mount bolt backing out because not tightened, but the oil add cover bracket big ass screw is overtightened and rounded out. So add oil through the level indicator for now, drill and replace later.
But overall works and works well, and bike is what I was expecting/hoping for.
