Nice looking build, Quick question, is the engine hanging on 2 bolts or is it held some other way,

Cable ties and duct tape. The Canadian stuff is a lot stronger.

FWIW I saw two of ATR's bikes on the big track at Mosport on the weekend and nobody died.

my understanding is that these are the real no B.S. GP bikes. I know that they made several variations of the YZR500. The NSR500 has two bolts in the front for the engine mounts and one in the back. The Yamaha if I remember the bolt goes through the engine mount to the other side and another mounts in the rear. Its interesting how the 3MA and 3XV frames have similar setups. I don't know if its true, but I heard that after a season the bikes will get crushed unless you won and the factory would let you keep the bike to the outright champion.. I have seeing the TZ250 up close and these up close. I would say that maybe not refined cosmetically. They strictly for racing. You can appreciate them and a year or two later. Some of the similar components show on the street bike. If you haven't seen on you tube "The unrideables"" You should. These bikes were scary :smt010
What type of racing? at Motosport? Even if the NSR500 and YZF500R are wild I would trust my life with one of them.

that's what I was told or a privateer. neither one of them look like an RG500 or an RZ500. I have never seen the frame on a street bike. The engines I have never seen them on a street bike. I can find out for sure in two weeks.

I'd put money on the last 5 pictures being taken in the shop of Adjustment Tech Racing. I'm sure he would appreciate such praise from someone as knowledgeable as you.

I'm still in GP 101 the first course. I'm trying to get more information as I write this. What do you know? They made so may variations of the pipes alone. chime in with what you know. what throws me off are the intake manifolds, but I heard they made different variations of the YZR500. what about the second picture? the frame?

I just got confirmation the first two pictures are the real thing. I was advice to see how the front engine mounts get mounted. I had a project bike build for me a 250. The frame mounts were used.

Where are those pictures from? The NSR looks like an NSR500V privateer bike.

I saw that YZR500 frame/swing arm for sale 2 years back and reached out to the seller - but passed on them. The seller wanted $35,000 for the set. I believe they are 1994 chassis parts.

The problem with an NSR is that each bike was a unique build unlike the YZRs that shared many common parts with other Yamaha race bikes. That makes restoring or keeping an NSR going an impossibly expensive task.

Pretty much everything needs to be custom made/fabricated/remade to repair or restore.

That being said, I am still looking for a 1985 OW81 frame and swing arm :)

As for research material, the Pitwalk Photo Collection and Racers series Japanese magazines are essential pictorial resources.

I have 2 copies of all the appropriate issues as I have literally read them to pieces. If you are affluent Japanese reader they are treasure troves of technical data as well.

And as for the story about crushing the GP bikes to keep trade secrets hidden. All nonsense and BS, the reality is probably more likely liability of old race parts rather than keeping secrets hidden.

It is rumored that the factories faced some tax obligations based on the bikes values if they where no longer being raced and got sold off for profit. This is why many did not make it back to Japan - or if they did, they where recycled and cannibalized - the bikes that where gifted to champions where done so as the bike gifting was written into the contracts.

See all the ex-champions with they winning bikes on hand for reference. This contracted tradition goes way back.

Many of the bikes made it back to Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasakis' museums. The rest where either sold on to privateers or cannibalized for the next model.

There are many ex-GP bikes still in private hands. Very few NSR500s though. Most where too expensive to buy outright and so where eased and thus returned at the end of the season.

There are probably 40 or more YZ500s (from 1987 through 2000) in private hands these days.

*post edited* Posting at 4am after a long night is never a good idea. Not only did I not properly read the post I was replying to but I also did not complete the thought I was posting.

My bad - I screwed up :)

I agree it certainly fits the NSR500v designation. Very rare as you said. One of the guy's on the NSR World forum has an ex GP one maybe 2 [Venneman?] so at least a reference to keeping one alive as well as Turfrey it seems, ceramic bearings and all!

Yes, the NSR500V was a over the shelf purchase from HRC. Just like an RS125 or RS250. Any one with 95 million yen in 1997/8/9 could have 1. It was the late 1990's equivalent of the 1984-87 RS500.

I seem to recall only about 30 people ever put the money down. It was supposed to be the Honda privateer way to fill the grid, except it was never quick enough to win against the factory efforts and to make matters worse Honda fielded a couple of factory backed NSR500Vs at one stage so that made the privateer ones seem even slower.
