Sweet shop. Think about some homemade solar panels for some free heat. Hopefully the would sit on the back of the shop. I need to add pull down cords and air hoses to my small shop. Good luck with builder and I am sure you will enjoy it.

Builder is Mennonite, as were the concrete guys. Great skills and great integrity. I went out of my way to find these guys. There are plenty of builders out there. I wanted someone I could trust. I'm extremely pleased with the job so far.pstamper wrote: Good luck with builder and I am sure you will enjoy it.

That is a good thing. I am starting on my house this winter since I am about to go a little nuts after living at my shop for the past 5 months. Trying to get power switched to underground and two electricians are flaking out already. Not looking forward to being the general contractor.

Re: New Project
My builder just emailed to say the trusses are here and he's starting Tuesday morning. That's 3 weeks earlier than expected and absolutely bloody awesome. Should be done by Friday. Then I get to start dealing with electrical. It's a little odd here as the permit process is all done over the phone and by email. They only show up to inspect the trench and again to inspect the final result when finished. The trench will be interesting here. Whatever the depth required is, I'm unlikely to get there with nothing but rock here. I'm hoping it isn't a huge pain in the ass to deal with.
I don't envy you being your own contractor for a house build. Lots of work. I don't have the patience for the subs you have to deal with. Buy yourself a sturdy pair of ass-kicking boots.

Absolutely love all the trees and greenery around your place!
Congrats on this great project.

Re: New Project
If it is fed from your house and doesn't pass under the driveway it only needs 450mm. If it has a separate feed and its own meter it is 900mm and 1200 at the building entry. They will have to bury a treated board over the cable but may have accommodations for rock, it doesn't say trench, it says buried depth, worst case could be you end up with an 18" berm between the shop and the house .silverstrom wrote:The trench will be interesting here. Re: New Project
Thanks Russ. That info is exactly what I needed.
It will be fed from the house, so that makes things a lot easier. I should be able to get down 450 mm, but it definitely won't be a straight line. I may need 200 feet of cable to do the 60 foot run.

Re: New Project
Talk to the inspector first and find out what he expects. the intent of the code is to stop you from ramming a spade through a service cable laying on rock 6 inches below grade. They are generally reasonable guys and will usually work with you to get the job done as long as the method used meets the intent. Not saying it's the way to go but a concrete walkway from the house to the shop over buried PVC conduit for the service would be a reasonable proposal.

Re: New Project
Thanks for the advice Russ. I appreciate it.
I'm going to use Teck cable, so there should be no issues. My neighbour went through the process last year and it was pretty painless. Of course, he was able to dig deeper than I will be able to go. The garage will be finished by Friday, so I'll get busy with the electrical permit shortly. Ordered the siding today.

Re: New Project
They'll finish tomorrow. Garage door guys come Thursday (hopefully). The only issue is the man door isn't here until Friday afternoon. That will go on next week. I'm doing soffit and fascia and siding myself. Siding won't be here for a week. I'll get the soffit and fascia done while I wait. Eavestrough as well.
