She's home...let the restoration begin.

#1 Post by oldguy » Wed Sep 03, 2008 1:26 pm

Picked her up last night after a long awaited weekend. Made for a long day as I was at work at 6am and didn't get home until just after 8pm but well worth it. I didn't have time to take pics as it was dark and I just wanted a beer and some grub! I'll take some tonight when I get home and post.
My plan is to keep her stock as I go through every detail/part of the bike.
I assume it would be best to inspect and reseal the engine as it has not been started in 15 or so years. Brakes, forks, all bearings, fasteners, chain, tires......the list goes on.
I will probably be asking some questions/advise at times during the resto and have found very informative info from this forum. Though this engine is new to me I have worked on many of 2 strokes in the past including my merc V6 225hp boat motor (it's a screamer).
I'll keep you posted as the project progresses.

Here's a link to a post that I had given some info and a cell phone pic of the bike.

Well congratulations! You now have a very rare bike, at least on these shores. I bet there are more RZVs than there RDs here. And a nice looking bike too! That red and black looks good.

Hey Old Dude...

Where in SoCal do you live? I live in Orange, I have a '84 RZ500, although apart for way too long, it will get assembled soon. There are a lot of resources in this area for help with your new baby.

Congrats

Paul K.

Hi Dude

I live in Orange, my business is on Lincoln Ave, between Tustin and Orange-Olive. Where is Danny K's?

I agree. She looks in better nick than some 'restored' bikes that I've seen. Many congratulations!

Nice find! The black/red looks great. I just got an RZ this past summer and it's not anyway close to how clean yours is and with super low milage too. You did good.

Funny you mentioned that.
Last week when I went to take a look at it, and knew it had to have it, the time came to see what she would say. Money has been tight lately as I was out of work for some 5 months. I took her out to a somewhat nice dinner and as we sat having a drink I casually brought it up.
To my surprise she calmly Say's "Sure honey if that's what you want."
Almost fell out of my fn chair.

Now I'm afraid of what she wants!!!!!

Gotta love her though, She's the best!

Finished removing all the other components last night and ready to pull the engine.
I had a little scare when removing the oil tank...upper tank empty....lower tank empty.....hose to oil pump empty.......now I'm starting to sweat......
removed lower left exhaust and pulled it from under the bike.....walah oil poured all over my floor. Must have been a qt or more of fresh 2 stroke oil in there.
I have read that when these motors sit for long periods of time that the check valves will leak by and flood the lower left cyl.
Anything I can do while I've got the engine out to remedy?
Should I just wait until she's back together to address this?
Is there a kit for this issue or is a new pump required?

On another subject is it easier to remove the top ends first and then the rest or just pull the hole thing in one shot. I'll be doing it myself.

BTW I looked in each exhaust ports and cyl's looked excellent. Can still see the hone marks.
