Do you have a mint frame/chassis plate on yours? My RD doesn't have one and I'd like to get a replica one or siimilar when I start my restore shortly. Cheers.

Hello,

As your bike is from the first batch of 47x UK bikes it didn`t have a frame vin plate. The second batch 1ge UK bikes which where unsold German stock had the vin plates.

Steve

Are you saying not all 1GE bikes had a vin plate? My 1GE doesn't appear to have ever had one as there's no mounting holes in the frame. I'm guessing it would have been riveted on?

Cheers

Hello,

The 47x and first batch 1ge rd500lc bikes for the UK didn`t have the vin plate. But the second batch of 1ge sent to the UK in 1986 did have the vin plate because they were unsold Germany stock. Most of these bikes were repainted into Marlboro bikes to help sell them.

Very interesting (as always). So my Marlboro bike was originally a German model imported back into the UK? Were they a 47x german model or a 1GE?

Hi Andy,

They were all 1ge,Yamaha had no problems selling the 47x model bikes.
I have all the frame numbers now for all the UK 47x and 1ge bikes. In time i will go into more detail,i have a lot of info on pre-production and production numbers.

By that, does that mean they had a problem selling the 1GE models? If so, how come?

Hi Ronnie,
By 1986 the rg500 was on the scene and the fz750.Some of the 1ge bikes didn`t sell until 1989

Hi steve

You said they imported german bikes in 1986 as the 47x bikes sold well. Did these german imports cause overstock then and them hanging around until 89?. Was my marlboro bike originally a german 47x or a german 1ge? Very confused now!

Cheers

Sorry Andy,
The first 1ge batch of around x00 bikes came into the UK in March 1985 and sold ok.They did not sell out like all the 47x bikes had.In 1986 Germany had around x00 unsold bikes which were sent to the UK and most were painted in Marlboro colours to help sell them.Your bike is a unsold German 1ge but sold as a UK bike.

Very intesting, other than the paint scheme were there any other differences between the UK and German models?
