Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #9)
Hey guys,
finished today the race-outfit for my RD 500.
The road-outfit you know already from the article “New in” under members ride.
Was still not able to finish the engine. I got the carbs and so on,
but the VForce 3 still missing since 5 Weeks and also waiting for the PVM rims since 24 weeks.
The style is leaned on the Norick Abe #9.
The colour is not like at the picture, the red is like the ambulance.
On Wednesday I will go with my 250 to “Autodomo Most” and will take the RD also with me to go for a few slow rounds in the evening,
to see if all is working. And adjust the racing fork. It´s a pity, the racing rear shock absorber is also missing.
Hope I will not crash her, was a hell of work to prepare her.
Hop you like the pictures.

Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #5)
Good luck with the ride. What forks are on it. What shock are you waiting for? How far did you raise the forks to get better steering head angle? I am thinking of longer clevisvfor shock to raise back higher. I have a lot of weight on the front of mine.

Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #5)
Better pictures please. And what is a kick stand doing on a race bike?
Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #5)
Hey pstamper,
the fork I´m using is a modified R1 (RN04) one.
I was looking for a YZF 750 SP fork, but could not get.
I like the SP fork, good working as serial and at top the length with the same diameter is really long.
So you are more flexible in adjusting the position of the handles.
Now I´m using a modified R1 (RN04) one. Same length like the 750 SP (74cm).
And the serial spring is too soft for the R1 but to the lighter weight of the RD is should match. GL-Suspensions prepared the inner components.
The rear shock will get customized prepared from Hans Hoffmann, he did also the shock for my CBR 600 in the past.
In the moment the steering head angel is adjusted to 25°. I don´t know where you are coming from, so maybe you call it 65°.
But take care, I modified the rear, shock it is not in horizontal and I have another swing arm.
You are right about the kick, but I´m using her only 2 days at the race track, afterward back to the road.
The quality of the pictures is limited on this web side to 260.
Hope these pictures are okay for you.

Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #9)
I'd like to see the details of the vertical rear suspension/swingarm mods if you haven't posted them yet? Using an adjustable triple clamp?

Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #9)
Hi, good looking bike! Is that a modified RZ/RD frame?
Shake "N" Bake!
Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #9)
So guys,
Back from the track, was not good, crashed my 250 and my leg muscle got damaged and 2 cuts at the fingers.
But this is another story.
Back to your questions.
Yes, it´s a modified RD 500 frame.
About the rear shock:
I did not do the modification, was done from a previous owner.
But I started already the next project, because the RD frame is not something I like.
I will try to use the FZR 400 frame. Here I had to do similar modification of the GSXR swing arm.
You have to mile it down to the correct frame width. You have to prepare spacers to make it matching to the original bearings.

Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #9)
Next steps happened during winter holiday.
I had different targets:
1: better performance
2: weight saving
3: better optic.
4: keep the invest low
I modified the clutch, alloy instead of steel (weight saving 420g).
Preparing a new rear frame (weight saving 640g)
Braked for CBU (weight saving 70g)
Exchange steel screws to alloy (weight saving 180g)
Hm, all sounds not so much.
Nest steps will follow.

Re: Race outfit RD 500 (Abe #9)
Congratulations for the 500 cc
You have a sensor near the rear cliper what is this for ?

The sensor?
I have installed EGT at each exhaust. Because I´m trying to fix new carbs.
It´s for the checking of the correct setup.
Picture of the display you will see at the next pictures
