YZR style bodywork questions

#1 Post by Questo vecchio rz » Wed Jun 14, 2017 11:16 pm

Friends project, possibly might be interested in ditching his FZR body work in favor of YZR style, likley the front fairing only.
Questions:

1.) Does this (visually) work okay with a RZ500 fuel tank profile? (Any examples)?

2.) Who has it, how much and how long to get it.

Again ig going to a different fairing new mount need to be fabbed before powder coating frame and swingarm.

Bike looks pretty good w the FZR front setup, but might look a little better with a YZR style.
I know AirTech makes some variants, but read the 35O kit is far too narrow,I have two sets, frankly awful quality but perfect for a track bike.
Would prefer a better quality upper/lower..something that can be utilized without having to cut and add glass etc.. just checking if anything's avail out there.

Thanks :smt006

I'd recommend browsing the custom projects section of this site. I believe that people have use a few different years of YZR bodywork from a few different manufacturers.

Hey Questo,
I used the fairing from Moto Forza.
Not easy to make them match to the RD body. Rd is much taller.
You have to cut many single areas of the fairing and you have to extent them in the height,
because the steering handles are much higher. For how much you have to extent fairing depends on which fork you are using. I´m using the RN04 fork, so it was approx. 8cm.
I also had to make it narrow at the bottom. Attached some pictures of the preparation of my racing fairing.
Still not finished, have to prepare the inner side to get better airflow to the radiator to keep her cold at the track.
For the road not needed. For the street fairing I did not do it.

Hope I helped you.

Not sure why so much hate for Airtech fairings.

I have NS400, RS250, TZ250, TZ500 & YZR500 Airtech fairings and some old RZ500 tail pieces here and they are pretty well made and decently sturdy for race bodywork.

Not hate... just disappointed that it's rather fragile, and quite thin (and not advertised as such).
Marketed as (replacement) bodywork is a stretch...lol.
The overall price is rather expensive as well considering the YZR 350 kits are well over $1000.00 dollars and one cannot buy replacement indavidual panels separately with exception of the seat. Your forced to buy the whole darned kit...lol

Yes as I've mentioned perfect for a race bike, 7 ways until next Sunday,!
They are readonably well made and sturdy when mounted correctly, but still too thin to withstand spiderwebbing and stress cracking, which will not allow for a application of quality paint job, quality paint for a bike costs at least $500.00 and if subbed out to a shop will exceed $2000.00 so it's frustrating to know that it won't stay looking perfect

We have FZR , YZR350, GSXR,& RZ It's all pretty thin.

NOTE** AirTech is said to be able to supply a double layer of fiberglass upon request to any of his parts.

But at the end if the day..it is what it is, So we just have to deal with it...lol

Hello !
A bit aside of the original question, I'm interested in knowing or seeing what we has done with FZR bodywork !
Which FZR model, did it work easily, any picture of it, etc ..?

Thanks.

Sure, I'll post you some photos when I can get to it. It's basically a identical twin to Wynn B,s original RZ incaration, it looks pretty good as it still appears as a street bike.

Here is the exact fairing & tailsection he's using.
Actually It looks damned good like this, once it's painted to stock graphics. This picture and many more came with 2 boxes of reciets and paperwork documenting the build. There's 14k in documentation of parts and machine work done to this bike, all brand new parts. My good friend bought it for a song in the mid 4k range....It's at Turfreys shop undergoing alot of modifications and a preventative motor overhual.

The bike is almost an exact copy of this bike, The same, forks, NSR swing arm, rearsets, subframe mod, pipes etc..same builder or parts guy. It was someones project that just languished, for some reason then stored untouched for 15 years. Wynn must have had a part in building this or helping whoever once had it here, unfortunately he passed along with the mystery of it's origin.

I think I'll talk him out of a YZR fairing.

600 FZR from early 90's, I like it ! That's the one I'd like to adapt too.
It looks tight on the bike.
Better than the 1000 FZR above which looks too big. The bike "floats in the fairings" .

Great idea to include the headlights in the front side holes !

Wyn sold all those parts after he modified his bike for the 91 YZR bodywork. I just can't remember who it went to. I think it was someone in the Midwest.
