New RZ 350 project

#1 Post by pstamper » Sun Aug 07, 2016 6:14 pm

Cleaned carbs, installed new float valves and seats, and literally one kick and fired off. Doing electrolysis on the tank and will most likely take to a radiator shop for sealing.

First start (trying to upload video)

Great lil engines on the 350, when looked after a their indestructable, when modified their potential is unlimited and unbeleivable.
Hopefully your tank is better than this tank I bought on Craigslist for 40 bucks, outside condition was very nice, but this is what came out if the inside, literally 16 oz. of rust flakes, it actually created some leaks! The seller told me he left fuel in it for 5 years to preserve the inside...lol UGgggg!
My method was Mc Gyver'ed & unortodox, After citrus degreaser, I pressure rinsed for 2 hrs with. taped on garden hose , ler it dry then I poured in & $10 of BBs and a bag of aquarium gravel and 5 lbs sand with a handfull of misc small nuts & bolts, then, Taped & wrapped it in moving blankets and wedged it in a old HD clothes dryer, then packed more moving blankets around it to hold it captive and then ran it on & off for about 3 hrs. ( on cool) It actually worked pretty damned good. But barley fit , I dont think it would fit in most non commercial household dryers. After rinsing and force drying I used a full qt. of POR 15. I actually ended up selling it for 10x what I paid for it :-) People pay silly $ for these tanks even in poor shape.

Hi,

Just a quick question... how did you remove all that stuff from your tank ? - I recently cleaned an old RD500 tank with old nuts and bolts and it was misery getting them out - especially where the tank baffle was in the way. It just sounds impossible to get the stuff out that you describe - but obviously there is a way.

Thanks.

Cheers
Paul

electrolysis is probably the best way to get it out.

What I did was, I ran a garden hose taped to the filler neck & kept filling it while I shaked & rocked & flipped it, until everything drained out of the petcock hole..Rinse..repeate over and over.
No Doubt!! It was quite a work out. I had Popeye arms after..lol I did the same process after the POR15 etching solution. I also force dried the interior by taping the hose of a HPLV sprayer to the filler neck.
I felt the 8 oz. small can of the POR15 sealant in the kit was not enough, so I bought a quart of it.

I've bought 6 of these used 30 yr old tanks now & realize just how thin and fragile the metal is, On two tanks after cleaning & etching, so much rusted metal falls off inside, it looks like swiss cheese afterwards as there is just no metal left.
