Streetfighter RZV Roller

Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
Got a small update on the titanium relay arms.
Both arms can be cut from the original titanium block, and work has started.

Progress
Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
Just got the word that the titanium relay arms are done!
No pics or other info, but I'm pretty excited.
Sure hope they look good and measure up right.
The machinist still needs to cut a steering damper bracket for me, then he'll ship all the parts.

Preview pic of the titanium relay arms.
I haven't been able to get a final dimension on the bearing bore, which worries me. If the bore is slightly over - then these relay arms go right in the trash, and I have to start over.
I asked, and was told the machinist said the bearing bore was within the given tolerances. So, I'm hoping everything works out. They sure look good in the photo.

Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
Made an error when I measured for the relay arms.
I measured the ID of the pocket on the OEM arms (20mm) and used that number. I forgot the new titanium collars are also exactly 20mm.
Opening up the pockets slightly would be best, but I don't want to take any risks with the new arms. Just going to take a tiny amount off the ends of the collar, where it fits into the relay arm pockets.
Also pressing 8 roller bearings into the link and relay arms. Will have to remove them later for TiN coating.

Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
I would not recommend putting bearings in now and removing them for coating, the drawing had the correct tolerance for a proper fit, so you only need to confirm the part to the drawing. The coating is only a couple of microns, the ID will change more than that holding them in your warm hand. I suppose if you want to assemble first and coat all you parts together later there is no other way, in that case I would use some light oil on the bearing OD and warm the relay arm up a bit. Heat it up locally to remove it too just to make sure that it doesn't gall. For the pocket end I would see how close it is to fitting first and then hand polish the end of the shaft/collar with some fine emery until is a nice slip fit. Shouldn't take much if they are both on size. Fingers crossed.
Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
Thanks for the good advice.
I'll call the machine shop on Monday and see if I can get the relay arms before pressing. I could try to heat the arms and see if the bearings will drop in. I know the machine shop won't heat the parts, but will go straight to the hydraulic press.
When I TiN coat the relay arms, it's possible to mask the bearing bores, or coat them - which ever is best for the fitment.
I'll also mention the fit between the relay arm pockets and the collars, but the local machine shop usually does a very good job with precision machining and fitting.

Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
The hardness of the TiN would likely be beneficial vs. the impact of a very small decrease in diameter.
Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
Called the machine shop Monday morning.
Of course, no work has started.
Told them not to press the bearings, and to cut me some nylon dummy bearings for pre-assembly.

Titanium relay arms with nylon dummy bearings for mockup.

Nylon dummy bearings cut and installed in the suspension link.

Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
Cut down the ends of the relay arm collar for a perfect slip fit.

Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
That all looks really nice, I hope you are happy with it. Good call on the dummy bearings.
Re: Streetfighter RZV Roller
So far, so good. I think the length of the relay arm collar might need to be shaved a bit to get perfect spacing of the arms on the frame. Have to get a good mock up to know for sure. The relay arms still need polishing and all titanium parts get gold TiN coating.RuZty wrote:That all looks really nice, I hope you are happy with it. Good call on the dummy bearings.
2 of the dummy bearings for the link had the wrong ID (machine shop measured wrong). So, waiting to get that back.
Brackets on the swingarm conversion are too tight to fit the OEM collar. Need to shave about 0.6mm off the collar, which is at the machine shop.
Should have the rear suspension pre-assembled soon. Thanks for the help, RuZty!

No problem. Post a pic when you get it all together.Smoker wrote: Should have the rear suspension pre-assembled soon. Thanks for the help, RuZty!
