1984 RZV500R 51X-001029, 909km unmolested original RZV500R

#1 Post by 250GTLusso » Tue Jun 18, 2013 3:21 am

Well, after 25+ years of wanting one, I finally took the plunge. I am now the proud owner of a 1984 (I believe) RZV500R SN 51X-001029 with only 909 original kilometers! I was a little skeptical of the mileage, however researching the date codes on the tires (Front NAU224; Rear NAW244) and the overall wear on the tires (essentially none, as there are still "tits" on the tires), and condition of the bike (excellent - less corrosion after sitting for 28 years in Japan) I believe those to truly be original kilometers.

My plan is to undertake a "preservation", trying to preserve the patina, but address the Japanese environment corrosion that has attacked the aluminum and chrome details. Any and all suggestions would be very much apprecaited. And if anyone has any questions about original finishes, etc. maybe this bike will help solve any misteries.

Looking forward to the journey!

Thanks,
Steve

Welcome to the group.

WOW! Great find! But I think I'd change the tires before you used it. :smt023

Thanks guys! And it actually started on the second kick! Engine runs great, with only a minor fuel leak on the right side rear carb. Probably a dried o-ring after all these years. Go figure!

Thanks Steve

Actually this bike was stored indoors for all those years, as evidenced by the lack of any fading on any of the instruments, or fork cap numbers, etc. normally seen from UV exposure. The corrosion on older Japanese bikes occurs as a result of the high salt content in the air in Japan, especially when stored close to the coast. I see it here in California, although not as bad.

I'm looking forward to the "preservation", and any secrets that might be uncovered along the way.

Thanks,
Steve

You can fill in the cracks in the tires with rubber glue and shine them with black shoe polish like Burt Munroe .

Congratulations. How did you find one with such few miles? You travel to Japan or have a person on the lookout? Will it be a rider after going thru it or a trailer queen. With that few of miles it would be nice to restore as needed. You are aware of engine seals if going to ride. Looks like you are pretty familiar with two strokes by your collection. Bet the 125s are a blast to ride. Have you ever taken any of the 125s to the track?

my bike spent 20 years in japan . i think it sat to long as it had surface rust on the webs and the outer crank bearings where shot

just make sure when its running it does not rumble . myself i would do a top tare down and have a look befor going further

All, I need to aquire a service manual for my 1984 RZV500R. Any suggestions, or recommendations which one to get? I have seen some that cover the RD500 in detail, but I know there are differences between the models. I cannot read Japanese, so would prefer an English text version (unless it would be best to get a combination of a Japanese text version for the photos of the RZV and an English text version to read the text of the RD version). All inputs are very much appreciated.

I've never seen a true, full RZV manual. but I think there is a suplament to the RD/RZ manual that covers the differences.

There is a rzv500r manual, your best bet is to buy one from a Japanese auction site like this one.

Or the reprint

Or a copy

Well I have just acquired a 1987 Walter Wolf RG 500 Special Edition from Japan. Can't wait to marry it up with the RZV. Some pretty rare hardware!

I cannot believe it

i just missed out on that exact rg500 , i put in a top bid and you won it by 4,000 yen

i bet this is the chassis number HM31A-10522- ill leave out the last number

another thing is the kms on the speedo and the auction are to the number !

me and a mate went in on it . was going to be our money maker ,but i was gutted when i missed out by only 4,000 yen ... crazy

have fun with it !!
