Restoring my RD500

#1 Post by begbie » Fri Mar 29, 2013 10:53 pm

I got my RD last August , It's an early 47x (frame number is under 250)Swedish import and looks as if i was raced at some point in its life as all the crank case bolts and sump plug were drilled for lock wire.
Once the Engine was stripped i found 210 mains installed and ported barrels, it was running std pipes and filter when i got it, i think it must have had at least a different set of pipes on to make use of those big jets.
started stripping it down over the Christmas break.

Heres some of what iv done. But first what goes in this grommet ? its just behind the head stock.

As i got the bike

Gets pretty tostie around them pipes

Notice the "ERC" on the cylinder, they are a Swedish tunning shop

Lots of chassis parts were hand paited in hammerite ! Off to the blasters then.
Image

shortly after polishing servicing and fitting the forks I found out they were bent while trying to fit the front wheel ..... Doh

now its a roller
Image

a small selection of the parts iv needed Pistons are now 2mm over size

ill get some more pics tomorrow as the engine is in now,. hoping to have it finnished in 8 weeks.

Looking good!
The hole for a grommet is used to hold the airbox.
The lower cowl is supposed to have 2 pieces of heat shield material under the front exhaust pipes. But they get wet and come off eventually.
Enjoy your bike

Begbie
Thats good progress. Hope the start up goes well.
If you're using the autolube to deliver 2-stroke oil, I'd still use a bit of premix in the first litre of fuel just to be certain.
Good luck. Tell us how it goes.

Jeppe, Im in the UK, the bike came from Sweden.

Started the bike today with mixed success, fired up in 3 kicks but top cylinders not chiming in till some rpm is applied ( carbs sonic cleaned ) and powervalve cycles fine until engine is started then blows the fuse.
Any ideas ?

Aha !
Swedish bikeexport I assume.

You Said your bike had a lownumber, 250? Something..
My bike had 001099, is that lower or higher ?
Just qurius....

I'm no expert but it sound like the rear ain't get any fuel....check valveheights in carbs as a start.
About the fuse I can't say, haven't had that kind of problem with my bike.

Begbie,

Check that the fuel petcock is leaking fuel via the vacuum pulse tube. Had that happen to one before, it drowns the cylinder completely.

Begbie,

Also, have had the CDI plug dirty so that it would only run on two cylinders. Can't explain that one, but after unplugging and plugging several times then refiring the bike all 4 cylinders ran fine.

Hey Bill, running 30-1 premix from an aux tank so no fuel tap needed, but that has got me thinking, I did'nt cap off the vac tube and as the carbs are linked could this have an effect
(probaly make it run lean if anyting)?
I'll try the cdi plug as well.
Thanks, Ill report back tommorrow.
