Re: My project (1GE)
As far as I know it was a wrong outer machining around the big end and the casting burr touched the crankcase.
Would not be a big problem, I will measure and draw the old conrod in CAD and then i can cut the outer shape out of cardboard.
If the new conrods go through they are ok, if not I will grind or machine it down to fit.
Do you know if all the conrods which are available are coming from one supplier?
"Mitaka" only with a sample picture:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121743313424?redirect=mobile" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Yambits:
http://yambits.co.uk/rd500-conrod-kit-p-2499.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Another one which looks the same as the Yambits but more expensive:

And here another one:
https://www.pjme.co.uk/acatalog/Yamaha_ ... _End_.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If they are all the same I would take the cheapest

Re: My project (1GE)
I'm not sure, but I don't imagine there are many aftermarket fabricators for them. If the rod is shared with other bikes, that would increase the odds of multiple fabricators.
I'm always sceptical of Yambits parts and quality. Some of it is good, but I've received a lot of junk from them that I wouldn't use. The rods have a good reputation among builders, aside from the batch with fitment issues.

Re: My project (1GE)
Seems that the RD500 conrod is really just used in the RD500.
Length is 100mm, TZR/TDR250 have 105mm length.
Crank webs look the same for 250 and 500 - with the difference that the crank pins are drilled on the 500, on the 250 not.
So what you get as "RD500 crank webs are TZR/TDM250 parts which will fit.
Not a big issue, it`s a simple hole which does not need to be too accurate.
I guess the other side crank web will have a different counterweight on the 250 to compensate this extra weight.
Another option would be welding the original parts and grind it to new condition.
Spec`s are available in the bearing catalogue, just need to find a company which has experience with this work.

Re: My project (1GE)
The Yambit's rods are good quality. Rebuilt several cranks using them. I still use the OEM bearings though until they dry up.

Re: My project (1GE)
For the bearings it looks for me as the Yambits parts are also KOYO like the original.
More expensive than simply buying mass production parts.
Original RD500 big end bearings are replaced by the version with more needles (TZR250?), they are available in the Koyo catalogue, just did not find a source for them in Europe...
I think someone in Japan could source them for maybe 10€/pc.
70€ for one big end bearing is too much for me...
Maybe for my "good" cranks as I only want to replace all bearings on them (or simply measure and use them as they are if they are good). Don`t know if it makes the situation better if I disassemble them and replace the bearings.
Never touch a running system?!

Re: My project (1GE)
Thanks - I was starting to draw my cranks (to be used to scale and draw new cases with different engine mounts and reed cage housings) using a set of "Gus Cranks" - but want to be sure what measurements on these may differ from proper stock cranks.
Thanks, I will PM you specific questions.

Progress...
This weekend the fork should be finished.
Maybe I will start the frame to connect everything.

Re: My project (1GE)
Is there anyone who removed the parts out of the lower end of the fork chrome pipes?
I want to draw them (correct) in CAD to see the whole function of the fork, but I don`t want to disassemble my good parts...
At least one part is pressed in and a plastic ring is inside.
Or maybe if someone has a bent fork tube I would be interested to get it.

Re: My project (1GE)
I reread this post and wanted to let everyone know that the Yambit's rods have corrected the extra casting area around the big end. They used to be close to or touch the case but now they have relieved that area and it's more like OEM clearance.Speed Freak wrote:As far as I know it was a wrong outer machining around the big end and the casting burr touched the crankcase.
