That looks great !

Nice work.

I’ve installed Turbocad deluxe so I’ll see if that will open the crankcase file without crashing.

Cheers

Hi Michael,

Nice CAD work ! Looks really good.

Do you think a seat hump pad could be 3D scanned so that a mould could be 3D printed and replica pads moulded out of rubber ? I was thinking about this because the originals are very delicate and are now crazy prices. Although the shape is simple I was thinking that scanning would capture the texture of the pad ?

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,

I think the 3d scanner is not the best option for a replica of this part. It would be better to make a copy directly from the original. You just need a good sample.
I have one but it has some small damages.
And the second thing is that this part has a plastic frame inside, so you need to make 2 parts.

Not too complex and i know a company that is able to do them, but I guess the price will be in the same range like original parts.

I have an original but I’m nervous of taking a mould given how delicate they are.

Cheers

The other way would be to make a 3d print sample from a cad part. The structure is just a function in cad but not sure if it's possible to find the right pattern. For sure it's somehow possible to create the right structure...
In spring when my car is out of the garage and there is a way to get to the parts I will scan it.

Little piece of art.

Does anyone know the part numbers of the O-rings and especially the shaft seal?
The RD350 parts manual also don`t show them but they are available. Maybe the shaft seal has the same size?

If you CAD every part on the bike, I'll pay to 3D print a full plastic [or whatever] RZ500.

Just something else, fun to do.

Reminds me of building plastic models when I was young.

Your work is awesome.

I guess 2040 it will be possible to 3D print a working RD500 from my data... If I finish the project until then :smt005

Made the first small parts of the pump in CAD and scanned the housing.

Here you can see the difference between the raw data how it comes from the scanner and the automatic closed version.
The MIKUNI KOGYO letters are 3mm high and 0,2mm thick.

Quite OK for no surface preparation (simply scanned the cleaned part)

With some training the results are getting better...
I think that`s the "best" result you can expect from this scanner.

It doesn`t really like sharp edges, but still OK.
I guess it`s a 0,1-0,2mm radius everywhere instead of a sharp edge but thats basically the resolution of the scan (0,17mm distance from point to point, the single points have an accuracy of 0,05mm).

Markings on the oil pump lever are visible, so it`s fine for what I`m doing with it.

With manual measurig methods it`s a nightmare to get such a part right even if it looks simple.
With the scan it`s easy to make some sections, put in some planes and that`s it.

Found the time to play with the scanner and optimize the result for difficult parts.

Glossy or transparent parts need some preparation.
The result is nice.
I draw a parabolic curve in CAD and it matches the scan almost perfect.
In the cross section you can see how accurate the part is.
I have covered a sticker with paper and thin tape, maybe 0,2 or 0,3mm thick which can be measured from the scan...
